With five locations in the Milwaukee area (plus one in health-conscious Madison), Heinemann's is an example of a chain restaurant that came from a logical chain of events. In 1923, Dorothy and Byron Heinemann were candy makers in downtown Milwaukee who began to offer finger sandwiches to customers. It seemed natural to begin baking their own bread, and eventually, the pair opened a bakery. The restaurants, in turn, were an inevitable offshoot from the instantly popular bakeries, and before long, a family-friendly Milwaukee legend was born. Seniors appreciate the affordable lunch prices for dishes such as the grilled tilapia or the light, crunchy chicken salad. Portions are small, so you'll have room for a slice of grilled coffeecake with a scoop of Heinemann's homemade ice cream. Just one decision remains: Will you make that cake a la mode with bourbon vanilla or cinnamon ice cream? -- Jessica Zierten

Small but good
I ate at the Whitefish bay location this weekend. I am a fan of oatmeal and toast for breakfast and I herd this was the place to go for that kind of rustic breakfast. I got the baked oatmeal and grilled coffee cake. The bill was 7.71 for those two items. The helpings were small I have to say, just short of truly filling in fact. The oatmeal bake is just a small rectangle shaped cake of oats. The coffee cake is more of a offshoot of a cinnamon roll. Both items were very good but a little short on the portions.
