The strength of the music scene in a market the size of Milwaukee can be measured by its venues. Large and medium-size venues such as the Bradley Center or Modjeska Theatre are important, but so are the small clubs that feature local and alternative national acts. Along with the Globe, the Cactus Club is unique in Beertown for its long-running commitment to featuring local talent as well as talented out-of-towners with smaller names. The Cactus is a haven for rockers of all kinds as well as aficionados of the experimental. And the club's partition a few years ago into stage room and front barroom allows local South Siders the opportunity to yakity-yak about those crazy kids and their crazy music without being subsumed by it.

I was very fortunate on Feb. 26 to witness an excellent show. Was most impressed with Mahogany Throttle and stormandstress; wish the bride of no- no could have played first so that the late- comers could have enjoyed the Throttle; also Hal Rammel's magnetic instrument truly amazing, Jon Mueller's drumming superb. Owner of the bar Eric is always congenial- and thoroughly versed in music- especially the local scene, with which he has good repoir. To have a big gig at the Cactus Club means a lot for a band- the connections are everywhere at this more important venue. Bartenders Chris and Zephyr are always friendly and mix those drinks generously. Only 4 stars, however, until [new edition is added?] later.
