Though ownership has changed a few times since the early 1980s, Cooper's remains a mecca for all that is desirable in a neighborhood tavern: There's pool, steel-tipped dart boards, decent grub (the fries are terrific and pretzels by the bowlful are free), a full bar, weekly pub trivia quiz, laid-back customers of all ages, and plenty of TVs, scattered around the room for viewing whatever game's on (and there's always something on in this pub-cum-sports bar).

Still, what defines Cooper's, self-dubbed "Seattle's Original Alehouse," is the beer. There are always at least 22 brews (domestic and import) on draught, about half of which rotate regularly, plus bottle-only options, such as Chimay, Duvel and Bud Light. Certain days of the week bring drink specials, the best of which is $2.50 pints -- all of 'em -- on Thursdays. India Pale Ale aficionados flock to the annual IPA Festival, which offers around three-dozen varieties over a two-week period.
