Long before Lakeview was known as the hip and health-conscious mecca of Chicago, the Chicago Diner had already carved itself a niche in the up-and-coming community. In 1983, the vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurant started growing its legion of fans with traditional, all-American cuisine. They've brought the whole vegetarian lifestyle down to earth to appeal to the masses. Order piping-hot comfort food like 'meatless' loaves (made with black-eyed peas, lentils or tofu), Shepard's pie (made with lentil tempuh-bake) or Cowboy chili (made with veggies and beans). Chow down on filling sandwiches like the Groovy Gyros (made with seitan, vegan cucumber sauce, on whole wheat pita), BBQ Chix kaiser (with barbecue 'chicken'-style seitan) or the Yes Dog (jumbo 'hot dog'). And there's even a kiddie menu: grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly with bananas, or quesadillas. For the sweet tooth, Chicago Diner also bakes their own goodies, made with whole, natural and fresh ingredients that are dairy and egg-free. Some of the favorites include the cheesecakes, carrot cake, cocoa mousse cake, German chocolate cake and banana poppyseed cake.

Want More? The vegan desserts are sold at Whole Foods, Wild Oats Hinsdale, Earwax Cafe and the Evanston's Peoples' Market.

I was taken there this weekend by my daughter who is vegetarian and son-in-law, who is not. The place was packed and the wait was almost 50 minutes. Staff was very attentive and fun and food was deliciousl I had the reuben sandwich and took half of it home it was so huge. And the sweet potato 'fries' were so good, I don't think I ever want regular again. However...when it comes to cookies...sorry, gotta have the butter! Good taste but not the same mouth feel or chewiness.

Although our wait was about 20 minutes plus it was well worth it...Our meal was delicious and the service was wonderful. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a nutricious tasty meal. : )

Chicago Diner whips up an incredible, tasty and heart healthy feast! My only frustration comes with the inconsistent service from the wait staff; each visit has yielded a waiting time of 10-15 minutes before an offer to take order ... even when the Diner has fewer guests. But the food is top notch.

Avery good resturant. For me, being allergic to milk products it was like heaven. The milkshake was amazing and next time I go there I want to get a piece of cake. For someone who can not eat or drink milk products (not by choice like vegans) this resturant is definatley worth the money.
