Folk music in a strip mall? Sounds like something of an oxymoron, what with anti-establishment being the creed of so many singer-songwriters wielding an acoustic guitar. But somehow, Vienna's Jammin' Java seems to have pulled it off. Brother owners Luke and Daniel Brindley bought the place, once a Christian coffeehouse, in late 2001. Within a few short months they had a decent musical lineup and a thriving clientele. Both can be credited to the brothers' love of and dedication to music: The coffeehouse/club hosts musicians every night of the week; there is a state-of-the-art sound studio on the premises; instrument lessons are offered; and the place houses a guitar shop. Both Brindleys are musicians themselves and often take to their own stage.

While folk music has been the focus, jazz and blues mix in courtesy of national and local acts. The once monthly (first Thursday), all- acoustic "Woodsongs" showcase -- associated with a syndicated radio show of the same name -- offers an opportunity to hear little known folk acts, and a weekly open mike night (Mondays) hosted by local singer-songwriter Steve Key offers a space for newbies.

Although this is a coffeehouse with a serious array of coffees, beer and wine are also available. Nightlife in the suburbs has rarely been this good. -- J.E. Coan
