There's no room for sour moods or nagging worries once inside Dolce Vita. The petite Italian trattoria vibrates with warmth, whimsy and true Italian hospitality. Prime-time evenings force shoulder-to-shoulder seating but the rush of cheer is worth it. If there's a wait, slip into a seat at the bar, order a glass of wine and pick out an appetizer. Starters include outstanding Clams Casino and calamari and mussels steamed in white wine. Add a house salad or spoon up on cabbage, kale and potato-loaded minestrone.

Give the wood-burning brick oven at least a glance. Order one of the fifteen wood-oven pizzas (from tomato sauce and mozzarella to Via Mare with seafood) and you can watch it emerge from the fiery maw of the wall-molded "mouth of truth." Spaghetti, linguine and fettuccine-lovers face a tougher choice. Sauces vary from taste-bud-teasing sausage, zucchini, peppers and marinara to vegetables sauteed in garlic and extra virgin olive oil. Midday is another marvel. Lunchtime loyalists thrive on under $10 specials including pasta entrees, pizza and deli delights.

Ate there once last year and it was a weekday and still crowded. The food was good, salad was just ok.

I did notice the whole atmosphere reminded me of NY and those italian neighborhoods, where I grew up.

I really wish they would expand the place. I am not too thrilled with the fact that you feel crammed in there and can hear everyone else conversation.

I go to George Mason in Fairfax and whenever my boyfriend and I want to splurge a bit (still reasonably priced but hey, we're collee students) we go here. It's delicious and homey. Sometimes they have life music as well.

Whereas most people probably discovered neighboring Sfizi through Dolce Vita, I was the opposite. Whenever I want to splurge on a great meal, this is my place. The owner Joe is a great, warm, funny guy. I went here with family for my birthday and they sent us free champagne! It does get crowded, but they have a stand-alone 'cantina' for overflow seating. Reservations are suggested, although by no means required, but space is limited. I've yet to be disappointed with the food. The ossobuco is great and I always try whatever fish entree is their daily special. The pizzas are surprisingly reasonable and quite large (the mouth-shaped brick oven always cheers me up). While not cheap, I wouldn't call it expensive. Be prepared to spend $20-40 per person, depending on appetizers and drinks.

  • One of the areas BEST!!!

Who would drive all the way out to Fairfax to eat Italian. I would!!! This place is consistently one of the best Italian restaurants in the area and you don't end up paying the stuffed shirt prices of DC. Here you feel like you are in an Italian restaurant. The food is consistently EXCELLENT. I have never been disappointed with anything that I've tried. I see a few complaints about the service. Bad service can happen. I'm certain it was a chance occurrence. I've been here quite a few times, these folks don't remember me, and I've always had excellent service.

  • excellent food

my parents come from massachusetts 2 times a year and demand that they eat at this restaurant both times we have never been disapointed

  • NOT VERY CUSTOMER FRIENDLY

    Review rating : 2out of 5   cas7654 - 12/21/2006

The host/owner was very rude and unaccomodating to my party. Unexpectedly a 5th member of our party showed up at our small, square table, but the owner refused to move us to a bigger table. He claimed that an alternative table was already reserved for a party of 5, but moments later he split it up for 2 small parties. If you feel like being treated like crap and paying a lot for medocre food then I definitely suggest eating at Dolce Vita.
