From looking at its unassuming storefront on an entirely inconspicuous corner of the Ballston area, you'd never guess that Tutto Bene has such a strong following among critics and neighborhood diners alike. And while Tutto Bene fancies itself more of a destination for fine dining, with white tablecloths, cloth napkins and roving opera singers on select evenings, the spacious interior is more of a kitschy homage to Italy -- done up in dark reds, oversized murals of Italian landmarks and other Mediterranean tchotchkes.

The regular menu is an extensive roster of traditional Northern Italian dishes, including an extensive list of starter plates that come in both half and full portions. Favorite options include an appetizer-sized portion of fried calamari and artichokes, veal served as both a chop and done scallopini, shareable portions of pasta, and thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas. At lunchtime on weekends, a guitar player steps in to entertain diners, and more than a dozen Bolivian specialties are available from a menu written in Spanish -- most notably "saltenas," Bolivia's version of an empanada. Expect to be flanked by local regulars who know both the menu and the songs by heart. -- L. Adrienne Wichard

  • Always Excellent

We have been eating here for over a year and have ALWAYS had a fine meal, good, and great waiter. Sometimes parking is limited but we just pay the $5 bucks and enjoy ourselves. The atmosphere is old world on weekends, esp when they have the violin and accordian player..it's right out of the God Father! Love this place!

Service was adequate, but food very ordinary. We had two different pasta dishes one was a sampler(3) ..very bland and neither was very good.

  • Italian Food with a Mexican Flair

    Review rating : 1out of 5   purduejule - 10/24/2004

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time...and as its name suggests, it is an Italian restaurant. However, to our surprise on Sunday afternoon...complete with a live musician playing "Margaritaville"...Tutto Bene was serving Mexican food and the waiter seemed perturbed when we asked if that was their only menu. We wanted Italian, after all. The live music and the food - once it came - were actually fairly good...but otherwise, the atmosphere wasn't anything special (no carpeting, even). The employees were not friendly at all. The portions were small. We decided to try a local place...however, the Macaroni Grill at the Ballston Mall is 1 block from Tutto Bene and would have been a much better experience all around. We paid $33 for two and were disappointed.
