When you're looking for plain and simple comfort food, Bob & Edith's Diner is simply the place to find it. One of the few all-night spots around, this eatery has been serving the late night and early morning crowd since 1969. You'll find nothing fancy about Bob & Edith's Diner. The grill is behind the counter, and booths line the walls. The menu is big on breakfast with a wide selection of eggs, hotcakes and waffles. Here you can unabashedly order American cheese on your omelet or indulge in white bread toast.

For lunch or dinner, the diner offers dozens of wholesome sandwiches and subs. If you want something hearty, you can enjoy a hot plate special such as Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes, meat loaf or fried chicken. What diner would be complete without a case of fresh pies? At Bob & Edith's you might want to skip the main course and go right for one of the sinfully delicious pies, all slices priced from $2.75-$3.25. There's a second location at 4707 Columbia Pike. -- Robbin Zeff

Good food and good prices, with a varied clientel. You area just as likely to be dining with a van of Secret Service agents who all jump up and leave in the middle of dining, as with a car full of nuns, and a group of bikers, added to a couple in tux & gown. An they even have Country Ham!

  • Great breakfasts

I had been looking around for 2 years before I came across this place. If the service were a little worse, it would be just like the classic dive diner's that I originally set out for. Don't come here if you want a ritzy ambiance, but do come here if you want a great breakfast. Parking is sometimes tough, and there is usually a line, but the turnover is pretty quick. I've never waited more then 10 mins. for a table.

  • #1 all-around night food spot

I started eating at the original Bob and Ediths in 1972 and every time I've returned to the D.C. area I've returned to Bob and Edith's. It's simply the best place in the area, for years the only place that gave 24 hour service and 24 hour good food; a godsend for people working shift work and the mix of people , senior military in uniform (full colonels, occasional flag officer, Old Guard soldiers with short hair), jacket and tie, occasional gowns, firemen & cops, students with books, etc. It's gotten higher priced and isn't the place to go to every day or every night. The original site's the better of the two, the newer site is larger and doesn't have the intimacy; food seems better at the original place.

For years it was THE place we went every Sunday moring, occasionally waiting a number of people outside the door, in the snow, holding the Sunday paper from the news rack in front. It's not the same as it used to be but the menu's good - very good - mostly breakfast around the clock (nothing wrong with that), the food's good, the pie's been a tradition that earned it's reputation. The service is old time good service, and the juke box is simply good. The only downer is the prices have gone up and are what you'd expect in this area now - not the same as years ago when they gave you the best food (and all that went with it) at the best price.

If the prices dropped a little (a couple bucks) on breakfasts, etc., it would be full around the clock. And I'd be there regularly around the clock with my shift work hours - just like the old days.
