A dark wooden door marks the entrance to this trendy English pub in Alamo Heights. Once inside, an armored statue greets you. Plasma televisions and beer on tap bids you to come in from the figurative cold and stay awhile. If there's anything the Lion & Rose pulls off, it's making you feel right at home. Right down to the low key lighting and cushioned wine-colored booths, patrons of all ages lounge around toasting pint glasses, conversing and enjoying American and European sports on the tube. Do you need to check your mail? It's no problem with free WiFi. Pub grub includes British plates like the standard fish and chips as well as curry dishes and stew, but rib-eye steaks, pasta dishes, salads and an assortment of unusual appetizers can also be undertaken. This is also home to the Alamo Chapter of the 1759 Society of Guinness Beer Lovers.

If you are British then don't!

Don't bother!
This is NOTHING like a real British pub. It is a tacky, poor quality imitation from someone who obviously doesn't have an idea what a real British pub is like.
The place with the largest selection of decent quality European beers is The Flying Saucer at Huebner Oaks. (And no, I don't work for them but I am British and know what a decent beer is!).Add CommentGood Times!!
I recently went to the pub on Blanco & 410... My friend and I were very impressed. He compared it to a pub in Austin, saying this one was very nice. The bartender, very knowledgeable of the different ales that are served there on tap and at the perfect temp. The food... wonderful! The atmosphere... friendly and comfortable. Looking foward to going again and going when the rugby players are around. I hear it gets lively then....
Smoke-stack

Food and drinks were on the high side for quality received. I bet it is a nice place for soccer Houligans but i left smelling like a dirty ashtray.
Good service

We went to the once on Blanco on a whim when we saw that Jims was a little too packed, and even at 11:00pm the served us from the kitchen with no complaints (well, Chocolate Cake and fries (um, chips?)...it was a random night).
Superb

I haven't been there enough to comment on overall service, but can give two confirmations: first, I am a San Antonio native who lived for two and a half years in London and worked at an English restaurant in the heart of the theater district, and the food at L&R is unquenstionably superb to both the food I served and every other Brithish menu I sampled during my stay. Top recipes for all dishes. And the second qualification: since I married in London, my wife and I had our anniversary party at the original Lion & Rose on Broadway. Despite being obviously busy setting up the first new location at 410 and Blanco, the GM made a special trip to our party, where there was difficulty with the picture slides, and smoothed everything over with true panache. A top notch establishment as far as I'm concerned. -scot f guyanakooolaid@hotmail.com
use to be better
When it first opened the owners, bartenders and wait staff was quite good. Now that they are franchised and making money, it seems as if everyone forgot the importance of customer service and a friendly atmosphere. We use to love going there, but after a number issues going unresoved we no hit other places. Wishing they would go back to how they started.
relaxed and easy
We love this place. The beer is always cold. The service is friendly and welcoming. The food is terrific. You can sit and enjoy a game or a conversation any time of day or evening and still get great friendly service. Guiness=Good...especially with a shephards pie!
