Owner and Chicago-native Paula Sullivan spices up the quiet end of the St. Marys Strip in a subtle way. For one, this hip, dim and funky cafe is tucked around the corner from the main road and affably sits on a residential street. The low-key setting houses great music and food made for comfy canoodling. The first-rate Spanish and Latin cuisine combined with the (very potent) homemade sangria goes well with the weekly line-up of live jazz and flamenco. There's a patio out front for those who prefer to enjoy the music under the stars. However, the entertainment here is primo and deserves your full attention. -- A. Onofre

  • Getting worse -

There was a time that Carmen's was an OK - say again, OK - place. You could go, relax, get some good, if not great, music, etc. for a fair price. Nowadays, it is still an OK place - but Holy Moley! Where did these prices come from? By the time you pay the entry fee and the over-the-top prices for tapas and drinks, you are looking at a Ben Franklin for "OK" food and "OK" entertainment. If you are looking for some fun on St. Mary's on a weekend, go to Demo's down the street.

  • Absolutely THE best hang-out in San Antonio

    Review rating : 5out of 5   CJCraig70 - 07/05/2008

Carmen's has been a respected restaurant as well as a popular destination for fans of jazz music and flamenco dance since the day it opened. If you are searching for an intimate and personal location, unique to San Antonio, look up Carmen's. It's owned and operated by a friendly mother/daughter team, who will make sure you have a positive experience there. Yes it is small, and yes I wish they would market more to the general poulation of San Antonio, the nation's 8th largest city whose nightlife, sadly, is dominated by chain restaurants and bars and by the reputaion of the riverwalk. But even if you have to sit outside, the funky vibe, the friendly service, and the tasteful decorations of the restaurant make the experience worth the visit...

Great place, but if you sit outside, the doors are closed and you can barelty hear the music.. you are still expected to pay the $5 cover!! Go early so you can get a seat inside.

Had a great time. The food (tapas and paella) and the beverages (especially the Sangria) are top notch. Met some old friends there and made some new ones. Need to get there early on Fridays else you will not have a place to sit. The Flamenco music was great and the dancers I have seen are truly talented. Noticed people of various ages there.

The food is fresh, different from the norm, and expertly prepared. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I find the service confusing. Go to relax when you're not on a schedule and you're sure to enjoy the experience.

Fantastic neighborhood-feel with really good healthy-tasting food (not too greasy/salty) and the entertainment is top notch. A great relief from the usual chain restaurants and cheesy touristy places. I'm married, but it looks like a good place to meet people on Fri nights!
