Thelma's Bar-B-Que is a down-home barbecue dive that serves an unbelievable amount of good food. Nestled just east of downtown (and the high rents are creeping closer every day), Thelma's has started attracting a worldwide following of sophisticated foodies to sample its succulent Texas barbecue and attention-getting sides such as dirty rice, cabbage and yams, where a regular order weighs your paper plate down with a pound or more of goodies. Thelma's cooks its barbecue so that you get the delight of crispy black crust outside and tender sweet juicy beef inside. Don't expect silverware, reliable AC or hours past an early supper. In fact, don't even expect them to have any barbecue left (they run out of the sliced beef toward the end of the day on a regular basis). But the waitstaff will find you something delectable to eat and, if you're superhuman, you just might find room for some dessert of sweet potato pie or butter pound cake. -- Ann Walton Sieber

Disappointing - tough brisket, sugary bbq sauce. Plus, they ripped me off. First, I tried to order a three meat plate - chopped beef, sliced beef, and chicken, and she refused to let me order two types of beef. I think she has some sort of mental issue with it. Whatever, so I ordered sliced beef, sausage, and chicken, and an order of ribs. Well, after sitting down and eating a few bites I noticed that there was no chicken. After paying $24 for a meal, I expect to get everything I paid for. Conveniently, there is a sign (among many signs) that says something like "check your order before you walk away". Well, in retrospect that is probably a way for them to steal from customers - sorry, you didn't check your order, your problem.
In summary, not the best barbecue, and they stole from me. So I will not be returning. But the sausage was pretty good and the ribs were okay. I don't know about the chicken because Thelma probably ate it herself in the kitchen.

ARGTM - 06/17/2008I heard about Thelma long lunch lines so we went at 2:30 PM. I am a big fan of BBQ and had the pleasure eating all over Texas. Much to my surprise Thelma is the worst BBQ to date and the service personal are very rude.

Browasborwn - 06/07/2008I've only been to Thelma's twice because it's a good distance from me. However, the BBQ as well as the fish was more than I expected for price I paid and the amount of food I was served.

GdUrs7 - 06/05/2008Some days bbq here is truly the best... tender and seasoned to perfection. But other days, meat can be a little rubbery. I usually go for the fish sandwich (big enough for two) or the baked potato which are always excellent.

Bajimenez5 - 05/16/2008The lines are long ,the place is packed and the staff is not very patient. There is just too many people trying to get some of the best stuff in town in a short period of time (lunch) . The portions are big and the meat is slow smoked to perfection. If you got time to wait then i highly recommend you pick up a plate to go. You really dont want to sit and eat there unless you can take the heat and the crowd.
