Perhaps it was its top rating in Playboy, or maybe it's the diversity of the two top bars under one roof, but many still believe that for a downtown Saturday night done up right, the Mercury Room is a big, huge, M-U-S-T.

So, the valet is understaffed, you'll probably have to wait in line and the cover charge can be downright painful, but once you're in, you're IN. Faced with a choice between the lavish, balcony-clad, DJ-infused Boca Bar and the bar below that is the Mercury Room, you'd better hit the first bar you see and make your call. Once you go downstairs, there's no coming up for air. Actually, you're free to come and go as you choose between the two bars, but once entranced by the live Motown tunes pouring out of the speakers, you'll probably find yourself more than content.

The spacious downstairs seems anything but. It's usually packed to the brim with young hipsters. You can gather, lounge or dance, but don't expect a lot of elbow room in which to do so. Nevertheless, enjoy, for Playboy has spoken, and the Mercury Room is one of the finest.

    On 01/18/03 I had my B'day party here and it was sooo nice!! With 7 of my friends we partied with the Memphis Train Band that night and enjoyed every moment of it. I'll be back.

    im really impressed on the way people party here.Its like you in a diffrent city . it has a real old refined 50s gangster movie look. good looking broads and Men sitting back puffing on cigars is what youll see when you walk into this joint. sure Its a little pricey but its well worth the memories.

    The decor is great, especially the front bar, but after paying the valet, two cover charges, and the first four drinks, we were already out over $60, which is too much for Houston. The bartenders were friendly and the band with the cross-dressing singer was burning the place up, but the crowd seemed awfully impressed with itself and that didn't impress us.

    I enjoy Mercury Room. I like the music, the people who work there, the people who go there, and the hospitality. Its one of the only clubs downtown that you can go to and have a good time while others around are enjoying themselves as well. Its like one big party!
