Star Pizza creates everything they serve from scratch, even the sauce. The dough is handmade every day using only unbleached, untreated flour. The sauce is their own special blend of spices and herbs, and the meats, cheeses and veggies are piled high.

You might have to wait a bit longer to eat than you would at other pizza parlors because the pies aren't started until you order them, and this location in Montrose is very popular both for lunch and dinner. Eat inside or out on their large deck.

Pizza prices begin at $5.25 for an individual pie and $7 for a 12-inch cheese pizza. They top out at a reasonable $16 for a 14-inch pizza -- available Chicago- or New York-style, crispy thin or deep pan and on regular white or whole-wheat crust. The Rosemary & Garlic Grilled Chicken Pizza is excellent, as is the Starburst Deluxe and Joe's Pizza, with perfectly sauteed spinach and fresh garlic. Garden-fresh salads cost $2.50 to $5, while sandwiches like the Combo Sausage & Meatball and the terrific No Meat Treat go for about $5.

Other entrees include generous portions of Italian favorites such as lasagna, spaghetti and cannelloni and come with a salad and hot garlic bread for about $6.75 to $8. Beer and wine are available, and delivery is free. Visit the Web site for a full menu and directions to their two locations, including the cool X-O Room near the Norfolk restaurant, which features a private dining room, pool table, TVs and music. -- Lyn Foster

Really good pizza, all the time, in a really cool environment.

  • Good, but certainly overrated

I will be the first to admit that the pizza here is top-notch: the sauce is among the best in town and the menu boasts a wonderful selection of pies. However, I am definitely tired of hearing every single Houstonian hyping this place up as our lord of pizzamakers. Is everyone is a daze while eating because of its "jungle-chic" decor and Andy Warhol posters? I mean, what about Fuzzy's? FUZZY'S!??! Not even making the top six? Perhaps we need to look away from this undisputed king for a while and take another taste of the wonderful combination that is a Fuzzy's Pepperoni. Anything else and we risk looking like a bunch of San Antonians, with their blind following of the "tostada burger".

  • Great Pizza

Every time a friend comes back from Texas, everyone wants to know if they made it to Houston. If they went to Houston, they went to Star Pizza.

Star has great pizza, period. If you are expecting the exact same taste as authentic Chicago Deep-dish, keep looking. But if you know how to relax and make good memories over great pizza, go to Star.

If you are from the south or anywhere else, you will love Star... unless you are too uptight about labels to enjoy a great pie and unique atmosphere.

  • One of The BEST!!!

OMG! I love the Joe's Pizza... This is one of my favorite pizza places. I'm a southern girl through and through but I lived in Chicago... "home of the pizza" and compared to the rest of the food yall eat up there I completely agree the pizza is great... but that's not saying much. Anyone else notice the complaining parties were Yankees?

  • Crap!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   hewleet - 04/19/2006

The only people who like this are the southern people, who have never had real pizza. This pizza is so bad, it smells stale in a conference room. It was banned from the business I worked at. If you are from the south, you likely think this is good. If you are from elsewhere, you are laughing and taking pepcid. Its just plain nasty.

  • half and half deep dish

    Review rating : 5out of 5   dcolbert34 - 06/24/2005

I have never in my life tasted a pizza so good and the ingredients are so fresh! They do have the best in town!!! Their pizza will have you hooked!

  • NOT auth. Chicago Deep Dish

    Review rating : 3out of 5   nooorm - 05/18/2005

Service was great, atmosphere is good, but the pizza left much to be desired. We had a large "Chicago Deep Dish" Starburst on wheat crust. The crust was thin and gooey except for the edges. I am a yankee. I am from Illinois and know Chicago deep dish. Star Pizza's version is NOTHING like Pizzeria Uno, Pi, Malnati's or Gino's East. One basic trait of Chicago deep dish is the order of the ingredients: crust, cheese, toppings, sauce.
The toppings were fresh, the wheat crust (edges) were delicious, and the service was friendly, but don't expect autenticity.
