The oldest haunt in Houston, La Carafe wine bar is less a ghost than a piece of living history, a timeless challenge to the contemporary nightclub scene. This cozy candle-lit tavern hasn't changed much in more than 125 years. The bar is similar to those in New York City from the same era; intimate and low lit, exuding a warmth and character that, like a fine vintage, only comes with the passage of time. Behind the counter, a fresh flame always flickers atop the effusive mound of wax that has formed from the fading of a thousand candles. La Carafe only serves wine or beer and can only ring you up on its now antique cash only register. Not only is the wine list carefully selected, but unlike any other establishments in town, it isn't marked up 300 percent. The diverse jukebox compliments the atmosphere with immortal tunes from Edith Piaf, Django Reinhart and Hank Williams. Stop by with a date or good friends to enjoy the coolest dive in town for conversation and good wine.

charming

it's not worth writing home to momma....but it's a charming little joint....they don't take credit or debit cards, so make sure you have cash....i love going there for a night cap after an astros game...not too crowded during the week......watch out during halloween time... the haunted houston tour comes through there and everyone is gawking at you thinking you are a ghost.....oh yeah, i've never seen any ghosts there.....

It is truly one of the oldest places in the Houston area. It is very narrow and limited in space. I would say have a glass of wine and say you have been there when you were in Houston. It has history... you have to love that with all its imperfections.

This place is okay.... warning: they only take cash, so come prepared. Very creepy atmosphere- sort of disney's haunted houseish, but fun all the same. A nice break from the usual loudness of downtown clubs. If you get tired, try the Twelve Spot around the corner for a livelier atmosphere and $2 happy hour until 9.
