Empire Cafe is the sweetest cafe in Houston in part because, though they only serve one type of house blend coffee, they serve it with complimentary butter cookies. On top of that, Empire's cozy urban decor features spiny, star-like lamps and large portrait paintings of circa 1950s pin-up beauties. The front patio, covered and fanned, faces the Westheimer strip, while the back patio is more secluded. Empire opens early for breakfast and serves omelets all day. The lunch and dinner menus offer pizzas and dishes such as Pasta Napoli (linguini with sauteed shrimp) and Pasta Rustica (penne with Italian sausage and spicy marinara). Try a fresh baked focaccia turkey panini (with cucumbers and sun dried tomato pesto) or a portabella mushroom panini (with roasted red and yellow peppers, mixed greens and goat cheese). Save room, because Empire is perhaps best known for its homemade cakes, including the diabolically delicious Tollhouse Crunch. Enjoy a slice with a coffee cordial such as the Cafe Empire (Bailey's, Frangelico, Kahlua, double espresso, steamed milk and real whipped cream) or a Cherry Mocha (chocolate liqueur, cherry brandy, mocha, espresso, steamed milk and heavy cream). When you want to relax and have great food this is the place to come. The menu is great and the daily specials are delicious. Don't get me started about the cakes. What a treat. Have a slice with a cup of their great coffee.

the food is great...the coffee is fresh and strong....i absolutely love the atmosphere.....you get great food for not so much $$$......the patio is really nice during the fall and the spring......love it....

Starbucks please anytime!!! This place is not family oriented, and sometimes, not adult oriented. Except for those kind who endure that atmosphere. Blah!!!

I love this cafe'. It is full of charm and the staff is friendly and polite! Hubby and I sneak over early Sunday mornings. Great food reasonably priced...Sounds like a winner to me!

My mom and I come here almost every Sunday after church. I love the Potabello Mushroom Sandwich, I love the chicken soup, I love the coffee, I love the Pizzas, I love the staff, I love the whole breakfast menu. I guess I could just say I love this place.

Gum-chewing waitstaff

There are enough sanitation issues that have to be dealt with when running a restaurant and gum- chewing waitstaff should not be one of them. That is unacceptable! Isn't that in the top 5 of sanitation issues when running a restaurant? Although the food, cake, and coffee taste great, the silverware has been clean and almost everyone is nice, it is hard to swallow my food knowing that I may be swallowing someone else's saliva.

delicious-and not pretentious

The salads are very good... and the breakfeast (fruit) and pastas, Everything is so good here. That's a little secret so let's keep it that way. It's rarely too crowded, except around noon. I like it best when it's calm - after lunch hour- so I can study and daydream as I gaze upon the sexy art on the walls around me.
