Mama's Daughter's Diner is no greasy spoon. It's become such a popular spot for inexpensive, filling, Southern comfort food that several locations have popped up around town. The original diner on Irving Boulevard gets crowded for lunch early as folks line up for chicken-fried steak with creamy gravy and specials like chicken and dumplings. The side dishes are good, too: Try the baked squash and red beans and, if you're really wanting to do the authentic Southern thing, turnip greens. The fluffy rolls, cornbread muffins and pies with mile-high meringue (go for the coconut creme) will make you forget your calorie-counting. The atmosphere is basic and the clientele mixed. Everyone -- from office workers to construction workers -- comes for the heaping, cheap portions and the better-than-average home-style fare. Mama's serves breakfast and lunch but is closed at dinnertime. As we Southerners say, "dadgum." -- Kathryn Jones

  • Liver and Onions

    Review rating : 3out of 5   ESQ1128 - 05/30/2008

Had Liver and onions on Monday night. The liver was tough and when I mentioned it they brought me a sharper knife. It was still hard to cut and eat. Overall the one in Lewisville has great food at tremondously (sp?) low prices.

I haven't tried the Irving Blvd location, but I can tell you that the Royal and Harry Hines location is wonderful! Great home cooking with a warm, friendly atmosphere. Don't listen to those people who call Mamas "white trash" or "low class." This isn't a five star restaurant, so don't go here if that's what you're looking for. What it IS is a great little diner with wonderful food and friendly service. The prices are very reasonable and it's always super busy during lunch. That tells you something. You'll find everyone from truck drivers to Dallas business people in here.

Try it out, you won't regret it!!!

  • Best Homecooking in Dallas!!!

Mama's Daughter's Diner is my favorite place for homecooking. Their mashed potatoes and lima beans are my favorite. If you have not tried this place you should, because you are missing out. I always have great service when I go.

  • OVERRATED!!!!! Thumbs down

Couldn't agree more with previous reviewer! This place is totally overrated. They put NO money in the restaurant itself - it's dirty & run down. I feel taken advantage of because they put NO MONEY into the place. It's NOT a nice, or even decent, atmosphere. The food is boring/flavorless, and the staff looks like a bunch of ex-cons -- matronly waitstaff not included. Low class all the way, which is evidenced by the clientele! It's GROSS, don't bother!
