The original Kerbey Lane, which opened in 1980, still stands as a relic of old Austin -- smart and artsy, yet supremely unpretentious. Right in line with its commitment to responsible eating, the restaurant offers a variety of healthy options, like the Silken Tofu Mocha Cheesecake -- so popular that longtime customers regularly call to confirm there is still some left. Eat what is in season, and you're sure to give your body a boost from locally grown organic foods. Sound family-friendly? Then be sure to stop by on Tuesday, when kids 12 and under get a free meal. The Kerbey Lane is a wildly popular dinner spot, especially on weekends. So for a little less hustle and bustle, try visiting at the beginning of the workweek, when you might get a glimpse of Slacker-era Austin. -- Kimberly Morgan

  • Don't bring your great Aunt here if she's easily shocked...

Firstly, I really like the food and the eclectic menu selections at Kirby Lane and the breakfasts are exceptional. I only have two minor complaints: (a) their restaurants need more cleaning and fresh paint. (b) the staff is really great but I don't find gigantic, visible tattoos and pierced appendages very appetizing while dining. (I have the same opinion about the Magnolia Cafes and anywhere else where food is served)

  • Pancakes and Omelettes

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Richardebeck - 07/04/2008

As old duffers, my wife and I do not eat as much as we once did. We order one omelette to split and pay the extra dollar to substitute 2 pancakes for buscuits. Peach and blueberry are our favorites. We each have half an omelette and one pancake -- the perfect amount. We leave double the tip because even though we are splitting one meal, the service is still great. They keep my coffee cup full. One problem: If you go at popular times, be prepared to wait. In the spring and fall we walk the mile from our Barton Hills home. This gives us good exercise and saves parking for the cars with "save the planet" bumber stickers.

  • Great food meets local art

The one restaurant that both my meat eating AND vegitarian friends love! Plus at the South Lamar and 183 location they have people that sell a variety of things ( jewelry, soap, wire art, leather...)that they make themselves. Art prices are as good as food prices!

I took friends here while in Austin at a conference, and we were not dissappointed. The breatfast was great, and the service was superb. I love the decor and casual atmosphere. Thanks.

I normally like breakfast here, and even bragged to co-workers about the pancakes, but on this day when I brought a co-worker to breakfast I was very disappointed. We waited almost fifteen minutes from the time we were seated until a waiter took our order. then, an additional twenty minutes before our food arrived. As suspected, My pancakes were tepid at best (the butter would not melt)and the suface was almost hard but, not burned? The only thing I could conclude was the entire meal either sat under the heat lamp entirely too long, or it was microwaved. My tip reflected the service and quality of the food. total bill was $13 and some change. The tip was $1.00

Kerby Lane is an old family favorite! Its signature Austin atmosphere and delicious food make it a great place to take out-of-town guests. I've never tried a dish I didn't like, but I particularly reccomend the Kerby queso and the gigantic pancakes. Their hot chocolate is also yummy!
