Purveyors of smoked brisket to conventioneers, singers and Dubya.
The Iron Works barbecue's home is in the historic Weigl Iron Works building, which was designated as an historical monument in 1982. Since 1978, it has been used to serve the legendary official Texas barbecue. The Iron Works is visited each year by thousands of dignitaries, celebrities, officials and visitors from all over the USA, in addition to local fans. It should be at the top of your list of places to enjoy.

In Short
Housed in the former workshop of ironsmith Fortunat Weigl, this downtown eatery feels more like the camphouse of a Hill Country deer lease, with its pot-bellied stoves and screened porch. The dark-paneled walls bear autographed photos and testimonial letters from patrons such as George W. Bush, Bob Dylan and Martin Sheen. The chopped beef sandwich is a lunchtime standard. Sampler plates feature sweet brisket, sausage and beef ribs. Non-conformists visit the all-you-can eat salad bar.

Know Before You Go
Iron Works is next door to the Austin Convention Center. Beware: It can get crowded at noontime.
The Extras
Barbecue is good by the plate, great by the pound. Brisket sells for $10.60 a pound, beef ribs for $5.90, sausage for $6.65. Call for the complete listing. Catering is also available.
Where to Sit
If the interior seems too dark, try the open-air pavilion upstairs. Feels like a treehouse, albeit one with iron bars.

One of Better BBQ Places in Town
My favorite BBQ joint is about 30 miles south of town, and I only eat BBQ at three places in the city limits, and this is one of them. I really like the seasoning that they use on all of the meats. It is one of the few places that serves a really good beef rib. BBQ is always hit or miss, even at the best places, so there will sometimes be a dry piece of brisket or a rib without much meat. But Iron Works is usually reliably good.
Add CommentAmazing!!!!!!!!!!!

It is kinda upsetting when you look at these ratings and see people who say that this food is okay. This place is amazing. The food is great and the atmosphere is wonderful. It is nice to know that there are still restaurants around that are affordable and have an enjoyable environment. I would honestly have to say that my favorite part about the Iron Works is the old fashion set up. I love that there is not a fountain drink machine, there are tins of old fashioned soda bottles for you to choose from. Though if you ask my husband his favorite he cant pride his self away from the ribs. He is in love with them. So, in conclusion this restaurant is excellent and I will always be a life time consumer.
Mumm Mumm Good

There is no need to say this BBQ is finger licking good. Everytime we eat at Iron works we are reminded of the fact that this BBQ is second to none. If God created earth, he created the receipe for Iron Works BBQ. If this BBQ doesn't have a place in heaven....some of us may have to return to earth to enjoy the goodness so vote Iron Works is the best in the world not just he west!
Families restaurant

Best ever tender BrisketI
On every visit to the Iron Works, I intend to try the beef ribs or the pork loin but when I place my order I can't resist asking for 1/4 lb. of beef brisket on butcher paper.
AWSOME!!!!!!
I have been in the Travel Industry for 24 years. In my travels I have had the opportunity to try many BBQ Restaurants around the United States. I first stumbled upon Ironworks BBQ in the early 90's. I stayed at the Holiday Inn down the street and they suggested Ironworks BBQ on my way to 6th St. When I came upon it; to my surprise it was a converted Barn. I walked in and one of the owners(sisters). Spoke to me. I told her I was looking for good Texas BBQ and she said you came to the right place! I ordered the combination plate. (The sausage link, A (Dino) bone Beef Rib, potato salad and pinto beans. They give you 2 slices of white bread, pickels and onion. When I took my first bite I knew I had found a piece of heaven. There BBQ has the best smoked flavor and is always moist. Some BBQ places dry there meat out. But not Ironworks!!! So, fellow BBQ lovers...when your in Austin, I suggest Ironworks. It has always been a friendly atmosphere and good ole southwest charm. If you look across the street you will find the original building where it all began.
The coolest BBQ joint on earth

The coolest BBQ joint on earth. That says it all. From the rustic Texas flair to the cities Country atmosphere it is the place to satisfy a hunger. Come prepared to eat.
Real BBQ

If you want real, and I mean, real BarBQue, come visit the Iron Works resturant. Many famous individuals dine here and even have it sent to their dressing rooms far away. Let us not forget that Iron Works BBQ will ship food, sauce and whatever you require any where you require, from the bottom of the earth to the top of the earth. Charlotte, the owner, and Stephen the sauce master, are here for you. Who knows what famous musician or actor will you see with a grin of sauce from ear to ear. Stop procrastinating and come try it. You will not regret it.
Must Stop In Austin
Get four people from Austin together and ask who has the best BBQ and you are likely to cause a fist-fight. As a Yankee from Chicago, my opinion my not count for much, but I've eaten at Stubbs and Iron Works and hands-down, Iron Works has Stubbs beat for both food and decor. The only problem at Iron Works is very limited parking.
