Some of the University of Texas' most beloved institutions cannot be found on campus or in its orientation brochure. Dirty Martin's Place, a staple for students and Central Austinites since 1926, still serves the same hamburgers, fries and shakes that made it popular in the '20s. Dirty's signature item -- the oddly named "Kum-bak" hamburger -- is a greasy beef patty and a buttered bun with assorted dressings. Other offerings include beer and such diner favorites as chicken-fried steak, pork chops, egg sandwiches, onion rings, salads and grilled chicken sandwiches.
This spot's filled with UT memorabilia spanning most of the 20th century, and you can sit in booths or at the counter (if you're looking for an authentic diner experience). Still in its original location, Dirty's is within walking distance of UT, as well as the West Campus and North University neighborhoods. -- Chip Rankin

I miss Dirty Martin
They still make the best burgers. I first started going there in the 70s when dirty martin was still alive. His burgers were cooked with love and sweat. everytime he was over the grill you could hear his sweat when it hit the grill, didnt need salt.
Add CommentTasty Burgers but small
In our quest for the best hamburger we made it to Dirty Martins. Arrived..very crowded..good sign so far..got a table ordered and when we got the burgers were surprized how small the pastties were. I actually thought my double cheese was a single, until I opened it and also saw my wives single. Once we tasted the burgers we both commented that although small the had a great taste to them. We also ordered fries, I would get one per person based upon the hamburgers size. These were tasty as well. All in all..not the best, burger but I would return..however not when I am real hungry.
It use to be great....
As an Austin native and Texas alum I grew up at Dirty's, met all my friends there, loved the burgers. But now they are changing it after all these years, since 1926, changing the beer on tap, the burger meat, going for the Atkin's people. No more good old greezy burger. I want all the old alums to know it's over.

Oh my god - are you kidding me??? What a great place. Before the game, after the game, any time of the year - hands down best burgers and onion rings anywhere. And it never changes - what a classic Austin, Texas place.

The food was great. I really enjoyed getting my fat intake taken care of for the week all in just a few minutes. Sitting in there makes you wonder how many folk have enjoyed a good meal right where I was sitting.
