The Broken Spoke has been serving up Texas country and Western music and home-style cooking since 1964. The management will even tell you they serve the best chicken-fried steak in town and, curious as it may seem, most of the patrons seem to agree. On your way in, take a while to peruse the tourist trap, a small museum of Texas memorabilia that boasts cowboy hats worn by Willie Nelson and LBJ. Then head straight for the dance hall in back where the simple red and white checkered tablecloths and cement dance floor belie the long list of C&W heroes who have graced the stage. After all these years, the Broken Spoke has stayed true to its simple roots, which is saying a lot in this day and age.

Yankee Trash
I've sat here and chose my words as wisely as I can.
To RED MOM Don't come back with your little brood ok know nothing kids, that a'int what the Spoke's about.
The one wo wouldn't eat there again, GOOD, the foods probably not FOO FOO enough for you with your white buck shoes, black pencil pants, and white socks.
I really liked the one who bitched about the cover charge. If you can't afford it maybe your boyfriend can.
All in all I love to hear ignorant yankee's gripe and complain about some of our fine Austin nite spots. If you don't like it, then don't bother coming back, you probably can't afford it and ca'nt dance in your Birkenstocks. Go HOME to Iowa or where ever your sorry a## came from and leave the serious bars to the Texans. Got that Crackers?Add CommentTexaspointofview

If you don't like the 'Spoke, you don't like dancehalls. If you want to see a true honky-tonk, this is the place. As for the "northeasterner" who likes to line dance, the reason the 'Spoke discourages it is because they get in the way of people who can ACTUALLY DANCE!

The music was good, I thought the cover charge (12 dollars) was excessive. The food was ok, my girlfriend didnt feel well after the chicken quesadia though. I like rustic places but damn we felt like the place was a dump. You can keep it rustic and still maintain it! We come from the Northeast where line dancing is popular so we were a little put off by the notice by the door "We said no line dancin" above a picture of a hanging.
not bad

We had a pretty good time, but seemed a little confusing. Order food on this side, but you have to carry it to the dancefloor side. Not enough waitresses to serve drinks on the dancehall side. Line was too long to order drinks. Needs some major repairs but all in all, lived up to a real saloon feel, the band was excellent. The folks were real downhome friendly. I for sure liked the fact that before the band started, the owner had everyone stand & say the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag... God Bless Texas & the U.S.A.
Nice place
Broken Spoke is the place to enjoy music, beer, food and local people. Everything is enjoyable except the toilets. I am sure the management can afford to improve their bathrooms.
Barbs thoughts

To Mike, if the Spoke isn't the good enough for you, maybe one of those sweetie little bars in San Francisco would suit you better.
For the RedMom the lady that brought the 5 kids that won't come back I can only say thank God.Pamhutch1's Review
I agree it is a great place to hear some good music but it is time they invest some money into cleaning up the place. I am sure the place has been paid for years ago. I won't use the bathrooms so we have stopped coming. A good place to go is Boomer's. Good band's and clean bathrooms.
Ginnycarol's Review
The best thing about the Spoke is the people that go there: Texas friendly and ready to dance. The bathrooms are just tooo disgustin. How about investing some of the cover charge to some construction work?
RedMom007's Review

I was very disapointed that the food was cheap crap and the bathrooms were filthy. I brought my family in about 3 months ago, 5 children between the ages of 20- 13 and they thought it was a joke. It didn't make us feel special.I felt used and that you were riding on the names of Willie and others. Starting with locking/clean bathrooms, and NICE service. That would go a long ways towards making the people that frequent there, feel like you care about THEIR needs too, not just your own outdated idea of what country means.Country does not mean living in a barn. Personally, I think the Chockin Spoke is over rated.Until it's been cleaned up to make people feel like they matter too, I won't go again. And if no one can see what I'm talking about, then you've had one too many beers.
