While sushi bars are fairly common now in Nashville, the idea of eating raw seafood wasn't known to many just a decade or two ago. But Koto, tucked away in a slightly forbidding looking concrete building across from the convention center, has managed to not only survive since 1985, but to thrive throughout the years. About 20 tables and booths line up alongside the sushi bar, while Japanese screens and a bubbly fish tank give the place a serene air.
Diners at Koto find that the real action is back along the extra-long sushi raw bar. Four to six chefs work the row nightly, chopping, slicing and rolling up colorful fresh sushi and sashimi selections. The bar is especially popular during lunch for solo diners. Not in the mood for sushi? Other menu specialties include multiple soba noodle bowls, fish, beef and chicken cutlets. Plum wine and Japanese beers are also served. -- Sandra Schulman

Went here for my birthday a couple years ago. Prefect and well priced.

the sushi is wonderful and the price reasonable, the box lunch deal is great, comes with everything! the outside looks a bit shaggy, but inside it is nice and the food is great!

I've been to many sushi bars, this is the best. The staff is very friendly. Haije, the owner, is a great guy, and enjoys preparing the tasty treats that you will experience. Everything from Freshwater Eel to the best crunchy shrimp rolls to be had. Try the soy beans for a real treat. Go in, sit down, relax and enjoy.

I went to this restaurant based on a review, I have been going ever since. This is the BEST fresh sushi in town. They have other great dishes too if you go with a companion who is not comfortable eating sushi. The employees there are the sweetest people, I have never met nicer (how many times do you usually get impersonal service?). They remember us and always enjoy playing with our toddler (he loves 'em). I have had the same rolls at other places but it is never as good. I love KOTO! The crunchy shrimp roll, spicy tuna roll, and tempura here are the best. The place is also very clean.
Friendly Fish

There is now a plethora of Sushi Bars in Nashville, but the first of all was Koto. From it's humble beginnings tucked beside a taxi company on Fourth Avenue South, Koto has remained consistently excellent to this day at its present location on Seventh Ave. South. Friendliness and rapid-fire service accent the food perfectly. You may find the same items offered at other Sushi Bars in town, but none will have the flavor or character of the Koto's creations. The atmosphere is cozy and unassuming, and lends itself to friendly chat between tables. Go and have a warm Sake on a rainy night.
