A man of taste and multi-talents, Jack Cawthon first began in the food service business as Cawthon's Caterer, Inc. in 1976. While catering to Nashville's social functions over the years, Cawthon found there was a void in "good Nashville barbecue," and so began his homework. Jack Cawthon started Jack's Bar-B-Que and is currently located only 10 steps from the back stage door of the Historic Ryman. Seven days a week, Jack's Bar-B-Que proudly serves Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis ribs, smoked chicken and heapings of other Southern cuisine.

With pink-neon flying pigs flanking its sign, this barbecue joint is easy to spot among the lower Broadway eateries. Get in line at the back of the casual, cozy dining room to get your paper plate loaded up with pulled pork, ribs and sides. The pork shoulder is tender and smoky and the beef brisket is moist and peppery. There's also macaroni and cheese and green beans--pretty much the only vegetable on the menu.

The main dining room gets crowded when there's a concert or game going on, so look to the back patio for additional seating. And bring your pup--the patio is pet-friendly.

jgnixon - 04/16/2002Judging by the turnout during our visit to Nashville, Jack's is the favorite for BBQ. At first glance Jack's is just an other eatery on Broadway. A large vertical neon sign with flying pigs, marks the entrance of the narrow store front business. Limited seating stands between the door and the serving line. The red brick walls rise 10 plus feet creating a canyon for the wood smoke aroma to frolic in.
Many try to make good BBQ.Jack's does it right. Jack's BBQ is permeated with smoke. Not acidic like some I have tasted. Just a mellow natural taste you can't live without. We ordered the Tennessee Pork Shoulder, pulled pork served with two sides and corn bread. Sauce may be added in the their condiment area.
Jack's was suggested to us at the Convention Center. The natives do know what is good. Now these convention visiters do too. Jack's is the Best I have eaten!!
