In a city like Memphis where there almost as many barbecue restaurants as there are churches, these restaurants now take on a rich history all their own. In business since 1922, Leonard's has undergone a lot of changes. From starting as a seven stool eatery downtown to becoming the largest drive-in barbecue business in the world in the '50s, Leonard's still continues to play an active part in serving the Mid-South's barbecue lovers. From the moment diners enter Leonard's, newspaper clippings treat them to as much history as the waiter treats them to finger-licking barbecue. Featuring a barbecue buffet in addition to their menu offerings, its no wonder why Leonard's has continued to find a place in barbecue lovers hearts. -- Christa Michaels

GIVEN TO ME BY A LOCAL FEMALE G E. EMPLOYEE !!!!!Add CommentNon-Memphian Drew Up List?
My thoughts, too. I picked Leonard's simply because of it's longetivity. Among the many delicious BBQ places in THE ONLY city for BBQ are Corky's and Germantown Commissary. Interstate Barbecue gets a nod, too, along with Rendezvous and, if it's still around, the Gridley's (I miss that restaurant!) take-out. No other city in the world can touch MEMPHIS barbecue!

I agree.....who chose these BBQ joints anyway?By Liv4cruzin on 06/06/2008
I gave an honorary vote to Leonard's because it's the only one of the pack that I've even heard of. I lived in the area for 40 years & still visit family/friends in west TN; so most of these must have come on the scene since I moved to FL. With that said, I agree that the major players are missing (possibly for a reason). IMO, the best pulled pork sandwich & wet ribs come from Showboat BBQ on Hickory Hill Rd. In second place I would have put Neely's (long time Memphis BBQ family). The best BBQ salad (don't knock it til you've tried it) can be found at Corky's. And while you're there, try the home made tamales w/ chili & that to die for onion loaf. And though no longer there, Gridley's used to have the most awesome BBQ shrimp on the planet. No one in sw FL can touch Memphis BBQ. I have to go back up for a "fix" regularly.Your list sucks. Leonards was best now it's Rendezvous & Corkys

I am a native Memphian, now 70, so I have tasted many over the years. I grew up eating Leonard's. Now my favorites are the Rendezvous with their great location downtown and Corky's, a recent newcomer to me. We Memphians pride ourselves on having the best pork barbeque, ribs and pulled pork, but the real test is in the ribs. No other city comes close.

Who chose the ones to rate?
I have lived here all my life, and love good Memphis BBQ. Whoever chose the restaurants to rate did not get any help[o from Memphians. What about Corky's? How about Interstate? Not to mention Germantown Commissary?
I love Leonards, and have gone to them since I can remember, and they have good BBQ, but the others are better.Old codger's 2 cents worth
I haven't been to Leonard's since at the Belvedere Street location in the 1940's, but if it is even half as good now as it was then, it rates 5 stars.
Memphis Is BBQ

Have to agree with most of the others, Who put this list together. I lived in Memphis for 20 years, cooked in 6 Memphis in May Contests so I am familiar with the Topic of BBQ. Leonard's is the only one on the list I recognize. It, by Memphis standards is OK maybe a 7 out of 10 the sauce is unique. I liked John Willingham's the best, my wife votes for Corky's. Of course Rendezvous has a world wide reputation of being the best Some of the best pulled pork can be found at the local chains like Tops and Showboat. Then there is Interstate, Gridleys, Smokey Bones, the Commissarie, Coleman's, Marlowes, the list goes on. I think most back yard smokers would rank in the top 10 BBQ restaurants in most other cities. Memphis Means BBQ.
