Next time you've got a hankering for a south of the border experience, bypass Cancun for an evening at El Porton. The popular University of Memphis eatery is a staple for fans of spicy-hot Mexican cuisine and ice-cold margaritas. Though it's located in a strip shopping center on Highland Street, the ambience at El Porton manages to transcend its earthly bounds. Ask customers what they like about this spot, and you'll get various answers: It's a romantic sanctuary for young lovers, a party spot for hip singles and a welcoming family restaurant. What everyone does agree on is the food. From the grilled polo fundida (chicken smothered in bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese) to the rib eye ranchero (served with rice, beans and tortillas), not to mention all the burritos and chalupas in between, El Porton serves up a mouthwatering variety of traditional Mexican fare that pleases every time. -- Andria Lisle

This place is horrible, I used to live in Calli, and get real mexican food,Who ever voted this the best is high or drunk. This place is lousy. no taste and very bland. You are better off at Taco Bell..Save your money.

  • Give me a break!

My husband grew up in southern New Mexico and El Porton is hardly great Mexican food just because every person that works there is Mexican. You are better off going to the chain restaurant Abuelos, that actually makes enchiladas perfectly, which to me is the mark of a good mexican restaurant. My husband hates all the local mexican restaurants. He says none of their food is prepared properly.

  • Pleased customer

    Review rating : 4out of 5   joycking - 01/04/2007

Since they changed to a female hostess instead of the grouchy many they had, the place seems much happier. It's nice to be greeted on the way in and thanked for coming when you leave. I like the remodeling, too. Food is consistenly good and the same quality and seasoning each time. You can't always say that with Molly's

  • Has gone downhill somewhat

    Review rating : 2out of 5   tnjen7 - 01/03/2007

I used to love this place. My friends and I used to hang out here and go here at least once a week if not more. This was about 5 year ago or more. The service isn't that great, I believe the servers just don't understand sometimes. The food is okay but sometimes it seems that everything on the menu blends toggether as one item. Also I cannot STAND it when a restaraunt starts cleaning up, etc. 30-45 minutes before close time like vacumming, etc. and makes you feel totally like you have to rush through your meal.

  • The oldest "cookie cutter"

    Review rating : 1out of 5   jimandsam - 12/30/2006

The rapid buildup up Mexican restaurants in Memphis has been led by what seems like formula "Cookie Cutter" menu items. It's dissapointing that this trend persists in perhaps the oldest name in the city. It seemed 15 years ago that the Chefs were afraid of offending delicate palates long used to frozen TV dinnrs by not challenging that taste. Decor may be new but the food is the same. Still, a loyal clientele enjoys this mild approach but whether younger more worldly customers even give it a backward glance is doubtful to me.

  • THE LOOKS NOT THE ONLY CHANGE

I'M NOT SURE WHAT THEY DID TO THE MARGARITAS SINCE THE REOPENING BUT IT TASTE LIKE THEY ARE USING PAINT THINNER INSTEAD OF TEQUILA. I WISH THEY HADN'T REMODELED
