Standing proud on Central Avenue's antique row, Central BBQ came fairly recently to the barbecue scene. But thanks to its diversity, the restaurant's becoming a hometown favorite. Service is fast, friendly and efficient, both inside and on the cozy front patio. Those of you who prefer barbecue on the lean side (but without sacrificing juice and flavor) will love Central BBQ. Fantastic sauces - including mild, hot, vinegar and mustard - complement that smoky taste, so be sure to mix and match to create your own personal flavor. First-rate sides include slightly sweet barbecued beans spiked with chunks of pork, fresh coleslaw and delicious homemade barbecued potato chips. Choose wet or dry ribs by the half or whole slab. Contrary to local tradition, vegetarians are not forgotten at Central BBQ. A savory portabella sandwich rounds out the menu. -- Andria Lisle

  • What about the legends??

Central has average-good bbq..but what about the legends?? Cozy Corner and Paynes BBQ on Lamar. These places on this list cant hold a torch to these two. Cozy Corners ribs and Paynes chop shoulder sandwich are the best in Memphis. Both have been featured in more magazines and local/nationwide newspapers than any of these. i think you should come to Memphis and see for yourselves. A&R, Pig on Beale, Leonards....hahahaha..are you kidding me!!!!!!!!

  • Good Meat but sides are poor

Ordered the pulled meat with beans & potato salad. Meat excellent, the beans are bush out of the can baked beans and the potato salad had crutons in it/ not good. Could improve on sides to make a better eating experience! Service is slow!

  • The Local's Choice... hands down.

Central can't be beat for those of us who live in Memphis. Rendezvous is for the tourists. The service is friendly, and often comical, the atmosphere is cozy, and the 'cue is good no matter how you order it. Wet, Dry, the BBQ nachos, the chicken or the pork - you just can't go wrong here. And unlike a lot of the more well known chains, the meat isn't as dry as jerky.

  • Great food!

I've gone to Memphis 8 years straight for the Beale Street Music Festival in May and try to take in as much barbeque as I can. Central has some of the best , both ribs and pulled, without a doubt. I think it's a shame that the Rendezvous and Blues City Cafe aren't in the poll....I'd rate them right up with Central BBQ.
