One of Memphis' oldest eateries, the Arcade has anchored the South Main District since 1925. Originally built by Speros Zepatos to serve hungry travelers from the nearby Central train station, the ambience at the Arcade -- from the black-and-white tiled floor to the Formica countertops and vintage vinyl booths -- has remained virtually unchanged over the years. Pizza was added in the 1990s, and the thin-crust, vegetable-topped pies proved so popular that the current owner, Speros' grandson, kept them on the menu.
Today's customers reflect the re-gentrification of the neighborhood: Hipsters like to drop in for a slice of pizza on Friday night, then tour the South Main art galleries that dot the area. The Arcade's laid-back atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for Sunday breakfast -- pick up the newspaper and settle into a booth. Pancakes and eggs, washed down with a lime rickey, are a great way to start the day. -- Andria Lisle

Tucked away in the South Main Art District, The Arcade is a delicious and interesting place for breakfast. Having lived or traveled back to Memphis over the years, I'd not eaten at the Arcade until the Christmas holidays last year when I entertained guests from LA, CA, taking them (including a vegetarian in the group) to the Arcade pre-University of Memphis Basketball game at 11 a.m. that we attended. Talking about a two great treats--my guests raved over both! The story of the Arcade was entertaining to read and talk about while we waited for our food. The Arcade is small, so come with patience, and the service is great, the food is tasty and worth the wait. Bon appetit!

This place is back in the hands of the Zepatos family. What a fun and good experience.
