Texas has a bit of a reputation for largesse, and the Texas Cattle Company does nothing to dispel the notion. While some steakhouses focus on aged or tenderized beef or boast of their carefully seasoned marinades - and the Texas Cattle Company can claim all these things - the main draw here is the enormity of the portions. And the ample cuts of beef - all cooked over a wood fueled fire - in no way comprise taste and tenderness. The ribeye here melts in your mouth, and if you like a stronger flavored steak, opt for the Cowgirl T-Bone. Filet mignon is always a winner, too. The beer comes in steins so heavy they're nearly uncomfortable to lift. And the plates are easily the size of an adult's head, heaped full of sides. Pick from four kinds of potatoes - fried, roasted, mashed, and baked.

The Cattle Company is family-friendly and has a half-pint menu. The bar welcomes supervised children and will provide Shirley Temples with a smile, but the real drinking never gets too rowdy here. The atmosphere is certainly convivial enough, but there's so much food, no one has room for drinks. In shorts, it's nowhere near as elegant as say, Bern's, but if good value, great steaks a family friendly vibe are the order of the evening, this is the spot.
