Mesquite-grilled, corn-fed beef is the highlight at this historic steakhouse.
Conveniently located in San Francisco's Financial District... up the alley from the Transamerica Pyramid. Since 1928, Alfred's has served the finest, mouthwatering, aged mesquite broiled steaks from the very best Midwestern corn-fed cattle. Such specialties as the kingly porterhouse, the magnificent chateaubriand, the flavorful Chicago rib steak, as well as fresh salmon fillets, and the broiled rack of lamb offer our guests a true culinary treat. We have one of the largest single malt scotch lists in the Bay Area. Select from over 100 labels of scotch or over 130 wines in Alfred's bar. Mesquite-grilled, corn-fed beef is the highlight at this historic steakhouse.

The Scene
Set in an alley and seemingly back in time, this masculine steakhouse is a respite for those seeking steak and stellar service. Generous pours from the bartender make the crowd of mostly business diners feel like regulars. Red leather booths, burgundy walls and plush carpet heighten the historic charm.

The Food
Aged beef is the star, so no matter the cut, it is served in its natural state unless diners request a pepper, garlic, bearnaise or chimichurri sauce. Using Alfred's Steak, a 20-ounce, bone-in New York cut, as a gauge, it is doubtful diners will leave hungry. The Tuscan T-bone, sitting atop a bed of spinach, is wonderfully tender, with hints of rosemary and garlic. And non-beef-eaters need not fret; a grilled-eggplant vegetable plate, seafood and fettuccine Alfredo are on the menu. Two generously portioned sides--a choice between garlic mashers, baked potato, french fries, ravioli, creamed spinach or fresh vegetables--accompany all entrees.

Been going there over 30 years. Chicago beef, cooked just right (rare). Sides always good and generous, Caesar Salad surperb, waitors classic, service very professional. Tried Harris, Mortons, Ruth Chris, House of Prime Rib (not steaks,) None close. Wonderful bar and good wine list. J.L.

HORRIBLE! Plain and simple HORRIBLE. Burnt steaks, lousy service, overpriced tourist rip off. San Francisco has so many other great steak houses. Find another place, unless you like being shafted!
