One would never think that this unassuming roadhouse hidden away in the leafy confines of O'Neil Regional Park has hosted dignitaries like Richard Nixon (who was a regular), but it's true -- Trabuco Oaks is elegant enough to host leaders of the free world, yet homey enough for a family dinner. What brings these two elements together? It's most likely the simplicity of the menu and the unaffected cowboy decor. The menu consists mostly of top-shelf cuts of steak: porterhouse, filet mignon and extra thick cuts of top sirloin. Everything is grilled over a mesquite wood fire pit so there's a distinct flavor that most steakhouses lack, but the chefs tend to cook on the rare side (so if you like medium-well, opt for well done). The sides are just as hearty: baked potatoes the size of small footballs and garlic bread practically a meal in itself. Leave the necktie at home though. In an effort to keep the homey western atmosphere, the wait staff has orders to take scissors to anyone wearing a tie -- even Nixon's is on display in the foyer.

You can't beat a restaurant where, if you show up in a tie, it's likely to be cut off by a waiter before being shown to your table. But you won't mind a bit once you've tasted the juicy steak set down in front of you. In fact, for more, you'd gladly let them slice up any item of clothing you're wearing.

Yes, I'm talking about the Trabuco Oaks Steak House and, while their rib-eyes are to die for, it's the Cowgirl steak that I go for each time. And don't skip dessert - after all, what upstanding country steak house wouldn't have deep fried pies? ::thud:: And if the food weren't enough incentive, the drive there and the surrounding area will make you forget that urban life is only two miles away. You'll believe you're in the Hill Country of Texas instead of Orange County, California.

    Don't miss it. Go now.

After finding the restaurant which is down a really beautiful hill road surrounded by trees i found out the drive was sooo worth it! The decor was very unique and fun. The food was also amazing. The garlic bread was homey and soft, the homemade italian dressing was so good and usually I am a ranch girl. I ordered the beef ribs which I called dinosaur ribs because they were so huge! The rest of my party ordered the ribeye and my boyfriend ordered the cowgirl which is a T-bone. While we teased him for ordering a COWGIRL he got the last laugh! He had the best meal of all which is saying a lot because everything was sooo delicious. His steak was the most juicy tender delicious steak I have had in my life and I go to different restaurants a lot! To top it all off the dessert was sensational. Pastry dough filled with cherry filling deep fried and topped with ice cream. I cannot wait to go back and I feel bad for everyone who has never tasted this delicious food. It took me two hours to drive there from my house and it was well worth every minute!!!
