Sally Papia's name is well-known on the restaurant scene in Milwaukee. Lucky diners may fondly remember Sally's Steak House and Sally's Meat 'n' Place; both were popular favorites for local notables in the day. Well, she's back with the Balistrieri brothers, and together they have opened a delicious Italian steakhouse good enough for Sally to put her name behind it. Formally the location of Beccofino's and more recently La Dolce Vita, The Savoy Room's menu features all of Sally's favorite creations, including her spedini, delectable pasta entrees and signature tenderloin filet mignon cooked to order. Italian appetizers, veal, pork chops, seafood and chicken entrees also grace the menu. Most entrees are accompanied by a traditional relish tray, soup, salad, side of pasta and bread. Housed in the historic Shorecrest hotel, the dining room is elegant in its 1930s surroundings. The word is spreading fast that Sally is back. It'll be your chance to dine with a local legend. -- Rachael Liska

Nice room since it became available at the Hotel Shorecrest...
The neighborhood's ambience is good. I lived in the vicinity for about four years and read just up the street at the Coffee House. Sally was always known for good Italian cuisine since back in the days at the Knickerbocker. I don't know how to rate currently because I live "out of town". But it is probably safe to assume!

Second time was a let down.
My first time dining at the Savoy Room was a very nice experience. The waitress was pleasant and the food was excellent. That was about 18 months ago. When I returned in August of this year, I was not impressed at all.
It was a Monday night, and I had made reservations for 7pm. My date and I came into the restaurant and there were only four other tables seated. Our waitress had only one other table, yet we had to wait 10 minutes for the water and the bread to be brought to the table.
My date ordered the Spedini and I will admit that it was very good and the serving size is beyond generous. It was very tender with the tastes nicely balanced. I was told that the Pork Chops Calabrizie were very good, and while there were three of them, they were very thin and dry. I would have preferred 2 (or even one) thicker chop that was moist. The onions and peppers that are served with it were good, but for the price I paid ($26) I would have been happier with less food, better prepared.
I guess that my real complaint was the service. NONE of the waitresses were smiling ever. It was a little disconcerting after a while. Perhaps it is the costumes they are made to wear contribute to their unpleasant demeanor. The French Maid look might work well for an 18 to 20 year old but I really had no desire to see our 60 year old waitress in a scoop neck and mid-thigh ruffled skirt.
In all I was disappointed with the whole dinning experience. Dinner and 1 drink each, came to $75 plus tip. In the future, I can think of many other places that I can spend $100.00 and come away with a much more satisfying experience. I was evaluating The Savoy Room for a client dinner, I will be taking my clients someplace else.Truly an unbelievable dining experience!
I have been lucky enough to dine at The Savoy Room four times now since it has opened and there has never been a moment that didn't exceed expectations. I have been there with a variety of people, including picky Italians, and not a single complaint has been murmured. To start, the tables are impecably set, everything being within an arms reach. Knives are set at each place, but we've yet to have an entree that didn't melt in your mouth. The chicken pastina soup reminded me of my Italian grandmother's--just delicious. The portions are so extreme that it is definately a benefit to go with numerous people, because sharing bites of entrees allows everyone a taste. We've had the veal, the pork chops, different steaks and chicken. From the bread basket and relish tray to the soup, salad, and pasta, the entree will leave you breathless and wishing you'd worn something with elastic in the waste. Aside from the food, the service makes you feel like royalty. It seems as though your waitress is simply focused only on your table to make your dining experience as wonderful as it can be, and support staff makes sure a water glass is never left empty. To top it all off, people watching is an added bonus, as the first time I was there, so was Robert Wagner! Dining at the Savoy Room is surely an experience that will not soon be forgotten! Enjoy!
