Situated next door to a popular sushi spot in downtown Royal Oak, Katana's location couldn't be more perfect. Asian small plates, sushi, sashimi and robatayaki -- grilled skewers with your choice of meats, veggies and fish -- dominate this clever menu, which debuted in May 2005. No detail has been spared inside the steakhouse, where custom woodwork has rendered this former fondue place into an authentic-looking Japanese parlor, replete with original artwork and a sushi bar in the back. Tabletop preparation stations seat 10 throughout the restaurant, as do a couple of booths along the north wall. The appetizers alone are painfully palatable, especially the sizzling seafood fajitas (served on a hot plate with shrimp, scallops and squid, sauteed in mushrooms, zucchini, onions and bell peppers). Beef tips, chicken stew Thai-style, grilled mahi mahi, yellowtail, and Hawaiian snapper merely scratch the surface of this comprehensive and sometimes exotic menu. Katana is a perfect date spot; the exciting preparation provides plenty of conversation possibilities.
