From the outside, this downtown institution doesn't look like it was ever the local produce market or owned by a once-famous Hollywood choreographer, but the restaurant's dramatic past is made clear in its wood beams, huge ceiling and fanciful decorations. Former tinsel town guy Steven Peck serves Sicilian favorites in what looks like a never-ending Italian village festival gone bad (it actually depicts Sicily's St. Ciro's Day). After straining your neck to take in the sights, feast your eyes on the menu. Everything, from the bread to the cannelloni is made fresh with strong flavors. For some regulars, this is their local pizza place because the thick and chewy pies are better than the entrees. Suburban families, groups and couples out on a romantic (yet humorous) date dress casually here and revel in the eccentric party atmosphere. Hint: A visit to the subterranean toilette is a must.
