Although it's been around since 1974, Rotolo's didn't expand until almost 30 years later. Then, in the space of a few months, it added three more stores, along with the original in Grandview. But although the decor is more modern, the concept remains the same: carryout pizza and Italian grub. And take note: That's just carryout, not delivery or dining in, unless you enjoy chomping on your pie while standing in the middle of a high-traffic area. This simple formula seems to have worked: Rotolo's has garnered nearly a dozen awards, including a citation in Los Angeles magazine as one of America's top ten pizzerias. When people describe Rotolo's, the word "best" comes up a lot, despite the lack of fancy-schmancy ingredients. The pies are quite basic, really, with a thin crust, plenty of sauce and cheese, and the usual mushrooms, onion, anchovies and/or sausages toppings. In fact, customers appreciate the pizza so much that the other menu items -- lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, and subs -- are often ignored. Still, no one seems to be complaining.
