In Short
An open kitchen faces the main dining area, where patrons can start the meal off with a house salad, or share enormous pizzas elevated on stands. Checked tablecloths set the mood; a hanging chalkboard announces daily two-for-one specials. Coveted pizza toppings include roasted garlic cloves, artichoke hearts and cilantro pesto. "Angie's Combo" features provolone, roasted garlic, eggplant and sun-dried tomato. There is also a cheese-less pie and a few standard pastas.

I agree that this is the best Pizza in Austin. The crust is great and you can tell that some thought went into the production of the pie. I probably prefer F&As because they dont use too much sauce and the sauce is not that super sweet concoction that a lot of other places use because the kids prefer it. This is adult pizza, and darned good. Oh, and I was surprised at the reasonable prices.

  • Why isn't Mangia Pizza on the list?

  • Good food, far from great

I have to say I was disappointed. The pizza was so so, nothing great at all. The chicken parmessan and pasta was good as was the dinner salad that came with it. If anything, the salad was worth a return trip, the pasta was worth going in for if in the vicinity, the pizza...I would not go out of my way. Now the ice cream with carmel drizzel was very good..but how about using Blue Bell...Left the house excited, left the restaurant disappointed.

Although I find myself over at Rocco's new place ( across 6th St., next to Katz's), Frank & Angie's is my favorite pizza place in Austin. Their "Chairman of the Board" is a crowd-pleaser : even for the most persnickety eater. Their prices keep me from driving across town to Mangia - which doesn't have much of an atmosphere to begin with...
