Pittsburgh's own counterpart to the Seinfeld Soup Nazi might just be pizzeria owner Vincent Chianese, whose gruff, chain-smoking demeanor hasn't mellowed in the 50 years he's been serving his loyal customers. Though he no longer makes the pies, his no-bull attitude also has rubbed off on his protegee-cum employees.

With the outside looking like a dingy highway tavern and an interior decorated mainly with beer mirrors and clouds of white flour, people don't really come here for the atmosphere. The real attractions are the pies themselves, wonderfully sloppy and greasy affairs with thick, fluffy crusts. Vinnie pies cost almost twice as much as those at comparable places such as Mineo's, yet even the small size is so huge that it's as big as a large elsewhere, enough for leftovers the next day.

A generation of baby boomers grew up going here, and its reputation has earned it top pizza honors in the area. Pizzas are the main menu option, and there's no delivery, so many who return to town make it a point to stop back at Vincent's even before visiting friends and family. -- Manny Theiner

Used to eat at Vincent's in Monroeville in the 1960's. Right over the hill from Gateway High School. Always a cigarette in Vincent's mouth! I am in Florida now, and would like one of his pizza's right now!!!

Since I moved from Irwin 4 years ago I had to quit eating Pizza. Once you eat Vinnies Pie, you cant eat any body pies. I have told people out west I'm from the Pittsburgh area, and I hear." Hey have you ever eaten at Vinnies on Ardmore"?" Vincents the best in the world

Went to Vincent's on a date in 1966 .. married that guy? Went to Vincents often (we ended up living in E. McKeesport Then moved here and there over last 40+ years .. now we are in Upper Burrell. We go into Holiday Park for Vincents Pizza. By the way, I've been on a diet but it went to hell in a handbag yesterday when we went to Vincents. Told my husband rather than getting average pizza delivered now and then we will calendar once a month to have a Vincents SMALL (and yes the small is pretty big) pizza and that can be my binge day!
Savor the Vinnie pizza ... tasty

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Cindyfrz - 06/12/2008

I had never eaten a Vinnie pie until about 5 years ago. My husband used to live in Monroeville and had eaten them several times. We currently live in Kennedy Township of Mckees Rocks and occasionally make a trip for a Vinnie pie, it is worth the trip...mmm. Hope to see you soon.

  • Best in the USA

I grew up on Vinnie pies. I once rented an ugly old apartment in Forest Hills only because it was right up the street from Vinnies. You wouldn't believe the dates I got just because I told them were I lived (it's TRUE!). Not the cleanest place, so just close your eyes and feast on the best pie in the USA. I now live in FLA and miss them so much.

  • UNFORGETABLE!!

I can still remember the excitement of driving to Ardmore Boulevard with my Dad, hopping puddles in the cindered parking lot, and walking in to that divine aroma, the colorful crowd, and a hearty hello from the robust and flour dusted Vincent, usually with pie in mid air.

I'd stand there with my nose pressed against the glass partition, and watch the Maestro kneeding balls of dough with floured hands, flying pies, and ladeling on sauce. With thick fingers he doled out huge handsful of shredded cheese, meats, and veggies. Then with a pivot, into the cavernous oven it went via his wooden paddle, with a quick glance and occasional turn of another oddly shaped beauty baking among the ten or more pies in the smoking kiln.

The operation was like a symphony, and Vincent, it's brilliant conductor. While making pie upon pie, he kept his staff moving and his patrons happy (even while waiting). He kept a fifth eye on the walkway to the door, an extra ear listening to the adjoining, grape-ceilinged bar, yet never missed a moment or two to wink and smile at little me, while exchanging a tale with Dad - and the pizzas kept rolling out.

Then came that proud moment when the big, wooden paddle delivered our baby to its cardboard tray, still sizzling, to be swaddled in white paper, stapled shut, and carried eagerly home.

I can't remember last week's lunch at The Ivy, but I'll never forget that crunchy-yeasty-bubbly-crusty-flourbottomed-saucerrifico-meatsamagnifico-jeezgivememorico-moltodelicioso pizza from Vincent's...A true American original, unforgetable, as good today as it was a half century ago (except for Vincent not tossing those pies now!). Worth the 5 hour flight back to the Burgh every time I return!!

Vincent, whereever you are, thanks for the memories!! And as for the pie - Nobody does it better - Nowhere, no how, no way, ever!

If you haven't eaten a Vincent's Pizza, you ain't had pizza. If you have, I'll bet you're drooling now, huh?
