Only at the Rex Theater can you check out a rock show, flex your muscles at open-mic night, and ogle the lovely ladies at a cabaret-style performance -- all in the same week. The Rex is a Pittsburgh institution, having been around for over 90 years. It's set up like a real movie theater, with a slope of seats and a stage and screen up front. The theater started off as a movie house and, after changing ownership, oh, a billion times, has since settled into a cozy, quirky spot for local scenesters to catch a show. The dimly lit wraparound bar is separated from the theater by glass doors. Here, you can sip your vodka drinks while schmoozing with the evening's performers. The neon sign, complete with fat, old-school lightbulbs, is a landmark of the 'Burgh's South Side, while the state-of-the-art sound system and DVD-VHS projection facilities have helped to set up the Rex's foray into the future.

I was very unimpressed with the Rex. First of all, they accept only cash at the door as well as at the bar. Who does that anymore? Especially at a venue like this. The inside of the theatre was no smoking, which is fine by me, but they were charging $2 for a bracelet to get in and out. I mean, for real how much do those bracelets cost? And at $25 per ticket and $4 a beer, I think they could cut some slack and just give you a damn bracelet. That was bad. Talk about greedy. And the people at the door were pretty rude. The bar is small and gets overly packed and you cannot hear the music well if you're in the bar area. Fortunately, I was there to see Dick Dale and he put on an amazing show, so my overall experience was positive, although the venue was disappointing.

    THE WORST!!!

  • Susquehanna Hat Company Show

I went to the Rex for the free beer, and saw some comedy troupe called the Susquehanna Hat Company. It was like ABC's "Who's line is it, anyway?", but funnier. Funny, funny stuff! I talked to them after the show, and they said they were there every Thursday night. I'm taking my friends from the office and going every week. Highly recommended!
