It's nothing fancy, but The Original Hot Dog Shop is a quintessential Pittsburgh eatery, known among locals as simply "The O." What's the appeal? Simple: hot dogs and fries. These may be the humblest staples of the American diet, but many aficionados agree The O makes them the best. Hot dogs come in a variety of styles -- plain, cheese, cheese and bacon, and kosher-style beef. Condiments include the usual suspects (mustard, relish, onion, pickle and chili and sauerkraut), plus mayonnaise. That leaves the fries. Dollar for dollar, the servings here are huge -- order a small, and you'll have enough for two people. Order a large, and you can feed several families of four. The O also offers a variety of hoagies, salads and pizzas, not to metion a good selection of beers. Perhaps just as important, this spot is open into the wee hours, so your late-night cravings need not go unfulfilled.

I love this place. If you feel like a hot dog, then have the Big O. No bun intended, I mean pun...............

  • The dogs aren't the show stealer here.

The hot dogs at the O run from very good to imitations of the movie theatre hotdog on one of the Sienfeld episodes, depending on your luck, and I suspect on what time you arrive there. My last hotdog at the O was on a Sunday afternoon, but I suspect that it was cooked the night before. The fries have always been great, if anybody does know of a place with better fries in Pittsburgh, I'd love to find out about it. I've noticed a few folks mentioned Primanti Brothers in other reviews. The only explaination I can come up for regarding that place's popularity is that most of the patrons seem to make it a last stop after a full night of partying, when their senses including taste have been deadened by alcohol.

  • The Best Place Anywhere

    Review rating : 5out of 5   BestMaster4Fem - 05/31/2008

I've been eating at the Original since its early days in East Liberty. I have traveled all over the United States, and currently actually live in Vancouver, Washington. There are NO other hot dog shops anywhere in the U.S.A. that can even come close to the taste and quality of the Original. You folks who live in or near Oakland are lucky!!!

Hey Original...come out west!!! Let the folks out here savor the taste of your food!!!!

    Review rating : 4out of 5   jongcolburn - 01/25/2008

New to Pittsburgh. Trying to find a dog that can top a G & L Chilli dog in Muskegon. A noble quest, I think.

  • Original vs. Nathan's

    Review rating : 1out of 5   ucpyramidsicm2 - 11/12/2007

Absolutely no comparison! People in PITTSburgh (a city appropriately named) are too ethnocentric and obsessed with sniffing Ben Rothlisberger's jock strap and eating mushy potatoes on a Primanti's sandwich to know any better, or that Nathan's hot dogs are far superior to any in America.
