The front room at Margarita Mama's is decked out in the style of a slightly beat-up Mexican village, with flour sacks adorning the walls, weathered brickwork and large signs touting tequila brands. The food fits the bill: on the menu are huge quesadillas, with a three-cheese blend and a choice of fajita vegetables, fajita steak or grilled chicken; and Chicken Ranchero (boneless chicken breast topped with salsa and served up with onion rings). At the bar, specialties with a tropical punch include Mama's house margarita (Gold tequila, Triple Sec and fresh lime juice) and pina coladas fresh from the blender.
As you might guess from the pool tables and brand-new TVs (including one huge wall-size baby), this place is a sports bar. It's full of college students and recent grads, with plenty of long tables perfect for hanging out. On busy nights, the beer's on ice in tubs around the room, so you don't have to head to the bar. In season, the front opens up to expand the party.
For pulsing lights and music, go on back to the Iguana Night Club, where DJs, including the crew from KISS 96.1 FM on Thursday nights, do their thing. For an extra fee, check out Iguana's VIP lounge, where you can rest on comfy couches and chairs. The sports bar, meanwhile, has a small lounge where you can enjoy the same comfort (and get up close and personal with two plasma TVs) without paying extra. At Margarita Mama's, it's nice to know that whatever the weather, spring break is alive and well.
