Pittsburgh's South Side boasts one of the heaviest concentrations of bars and clubs in any U.S. neighborhood, so when scenesters head down to party, their journey is often dubbed the South Side crawl. For 90 years, Jack's Rose Bar has been the crawler's most popular stop. Much like Dee's, down the block, Jack's has two sections offering variations on the same theme: cheap drinks, big crowds and loud hip-hop and classic rock blasting in the background. In the front room, a single straight bar accommodates the wall-to-wall throng that gathers here each night; in the back, a second bar sells mixed drinks, and billiard tables await hardcore hustlers (pool players at Jack's are aggressive, and the line for cues can take hours; fortunately there are electronic dartboards in the back corner). Peopled almost entirely by twentysomethings, this is the spot for students and post-collegiates to gather for pitchers, gossip and a mass exchange of phone numbers.

I lived in Pgh all my life until 9 yrs. ago. Most of the time I lived on South Side. I hung out at Jack's for a few years back when Katie and Freddie were barmaids. Still miss it. My ex and I had quite a few rousing arguements there! Good times.Good Times.

Any trip to Southside is wasted unless you goto Jacks. Easy place to make friends, drinks are cheap. Get there early and close it down!

Can't remember when it wasn't there. Used to serve great fish sandwiches in the 50's. Used to order from the back room when I went to South HIgh.. Great place, lots of memories.

ANY BAR THAT OPENS AT 7AM IS THE BEST. Great atmosphere, good drinks, fast service and it opens at 7am for those rare group bar crawls before Superbowl!!!

Imagine a place that time has forgot. Jack's is the same as it's been for last 50 years, the jukebox is modern though with a fantastic collection of music. If you could look up the world "neighborhood bar" in the dictionary Jack's picture would be there. It's a great place to watch a Pirate game in the summer, they usually keep the doors open. Yes it's very crowded on the weekends, but so is every other place downtown. It's a fun place to hangout with great drink prices. The other side, with the pool tables gets quite crowded, careful when walking past the refrigerators. So the next time your downtown stop in for a few and make some friends.

I'd give this place 10 stars if they'd let me. Cheers, St. Elmo's Fire have nothing on Jack's. Janet, Joanne, Scott; these are people that make the world go round. Celebrate with an Irish Car Bomb, or just a couple of bottles of Black Haus. And remember: It isn't a complete evening until "Sweet Caroline" is played!
