This Aussie-style eatery offers a fruit-based, Down Under approach to barbecue. Take your pick of pork, beef, turkey or chicken ribs, plus ''sangas'' (sandwiches) like the half-pound Dundee's Huge Pork (winner of 85 awards in world barbecue championships), and woodfired pizzas that you can see being made. Daily specials for drinks and dishes are featured on a huge, wood-framed blackboard by the bar.

Seating here is in the form of big wooden benches. Take a look at the lamps, metallic boxes with Australian icons such as crocs, koalas and kangaroos etched in dots of light. You'll even find a few colorful boomerangs in the restaurant's decor.

Inside the door is a huge Australian football trophy. Still, it's Pittsburgh, so Steeler Sundays on the plasma TV are a big draw here. If you're branching out from your usual Pepsi, try the old-fashioned Boylan Bottleworks soft drinks, with flavors such as birch beer, root beer and cream soda. And if you like the barbie sauce, pick some up to try at home.

The service was LOUSY. Our ribs were cold. We had to request that they be warmed. The took the plates to the back and I assume microwaved them.
    It was awful!!!!!!!!!!!!
Times are too hard to waste money. I will not go back.

I was in pittsburgh for a meeting. I asked the hotel staff a place where I can get bbq at, they told me Boomerangs up the street.
I went there as soon as I walked in the place you can smell the fire burning and food. I really liked the brisket and the servings are huge (had to get a doggie bag) I for one liked the food. I was sitting at the bar and a gentleman was talking to me we talked for awhile and I told him he looks like someone I know then I asked him where he is from. He looked at me and said he played for the Steelers his name was Townsend. After I choked on my beer I was pleased for the food and for meeting him!
I gave this place a three star because the bartender seemed more interested in talking to the them than taking time out to come back and see if I needed something else. But all in all it was a nice place to chill.

I live in Georgia and I do love bbq..A friend who works at pitt ohio near a bbq place took me there. Oh my, I loved the sauce they use and the ribs are to die for! I never seen Beef ribs that big and meaty in my life! What is really cool about the place is the servers are very up on things and you can see the cook cooking the food right there! If I have a chance to come back to Pgh I would go back there for more.

  • BEWARE OF WHAT??

    Review rating : 5out of 5   tincup2005 - 09/27/2006

I enjoy reading review of resturants before I patronize them, and it's not unusual to find bad comments posted on even the best eateries in town. I always consider the source. The food & beverage business has a high employee turnover, and it's quite common for a disgruntled former employee to try to disparage their previous employer by making a less than complimentary posting on the establishment. I trust without any reservation this is exactly what happen with this place. I've been a customer here for years, simply because in my expert opinion (and I eat BBQ all over the USA), this place is the best. I taken family and clients here many times, and never been disappointed. If there is a new owner, great. The place has been freshly painted, decor updated, and the staff is friendly and unpretentious. If you are looking for BBQ that is top notch, an atmosphere that is down home friendly and service staff that know their business, go here. I do. And I will again and again.

  • Beware!!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   ayemagnet - 08/31/2006

I talked to the bartender and questioned why the food was not like it use to be. She told me a new owner had taken over and cheaped things up. Lower quality, smaller portions and the prices on food and bar were over priced. She told us restaurant is running of the reputation of the former owner. The shrimp salad had baby shrimp instead of the big ones. The slaw was in condiment cups! Ribs were tough and lukewarm. Kid's hot dog was $7! Server was complaining about being slow. I don't know who is rating these "best of" but I was truly disappointed.

  • .Good food

I dont know where some would not get a parking place at this joint. Its up from the strip one block from spaghetti warehouse..there is plenty of parking there. I was last there last weekend. The sauce is so good..I went there last year and didnt care to much for the sauce they had. Seems the new owner is incorporating sauces that won best sauce in USA from all over the place..you pick the sauce you want..which is great..cause I love Baby rays sauce =) and they had it! The hot sauce is a killer they really should label it FIRE.
All in all I enjoyed this place and the new owner is very friendly and made sure she came to the tables to check on folks..to me that is a good thing.

  • Tops In Town

I stumbled across this place while down the Strip District one evening. It's a little further up the main drag on Penn Ave which is fine since you can usually find a close parking spot for free. I'm sort of a BBQ snob, hard to please so I wasn't expecting much. Surprise. This joint rocks. As soon as you walk in you can smell the wood burning from their stone oven. I took a fast glance at the taps on the bar and was surprised to see some I had yet to sample. So far so good. The service was quick and unpretentious, a nice down home, laid back style that makes you feel at home. I asked the waitress to recommend a good brew and she pointed out an Australian beer called King's. A bucket of 'em for ten bucks. Ok, bring 'em on I said. Outstanding. A lager that put the domestics to shame. The menu offered a lot of choices, but hey, it's a BBQ establishment so I had to try the house specialty. I was starved and ordered a full rack, my friend opting for the pulled pork. In short time, the food arrived despite being rather busy for a Friday evening. These are not your mama's ribs! They were frankly the best I've eaten, and that's coming from a BBQ snob who has sampled scores of ribs from different cookeries and festivals. I shared a couple reluctantly with my friend and tasted the pork sandwich. Bingo. Again, another winner. How come I never knew about this place? Bottom line, if you want real BBQ forget about the generic chains. Try this place. The prices are moderate, the beers awesome and the food top notch. I'll go back without hesitation and I'll bring company. You can't go wrong.
