How do you spell shot-and-beer joint? R-A-Y-S. This weathered looking taproom on the corner of Passyunk Avenue and Federal Street might be more authentic than most pub crawlers can handle. Its a block from the Italian Market and from Pats and Ginos, South Phillys rival steak sandwich shops. You can buy a sandwich from one of those places, bring it to Rays and wash it down with a beer. Which is fortunate, because Rays doesnt have a kitchen. It doesnt have any live music either, although there is a jukebox and TV.
It does have Pabst Blue Ribbon and a few other American standards on tap and a variety of domestic and imported beers available by the bottle. And it retains the ambience, if thats the right word, that this part of South Philly had before people started rehabbing Ninth Street and the rest of the hood. -- David McKenna

Rays Bar - south philly fun

we go to rays when we want to relax and talk and sometimes for karaoke.
my girlfriends and i love this bar. it is real without any pretense. the ladies room is tiny. but the prices are great. they welcome everybody and the bartenders dont allow drama. we feel safe and laugh alot. tony is the best. he always make sure every one gets every one home safe. very strict on the rules. gay friendly. forget south street. this is the new south philly.Add Commentneighborhood bar heaven

With years of tradition and a rich history. Ray's is the place that has continued to evolve as the neighborhood continues to change. In the heart of South Philly. The owner, Lou, and his team follow the tradition of his father.
Everyone is welcome. Simply a great neighborhood bar. The bartenders are awesome, the prices cant be beat. The bands (live music) on Saturday night range from rockabilly to rock and roll. The karaoke on Friday nights with DJ Lars is the best in the city. And the bar opens at 7: 00 am. How cool. Amazing place, ya meet people from all over the country. A lawyer. a doctor, a steelworker, a cab driver or a struggling college student. And the old timers the can tell you tales from years gone
by. We love this bar.
