South Street west of Broad is a strange collection of hair salons, secondhand stores, pizza shops and bars. So it's easy to walk by the unassuming Pumpkin and think it's nothing special. But then you'd miss the cozy atmosphere, helmed by a boyfriend-and-girlfriend team (he works the kitchen, she's in charge of the front of the house); the thoughtful entrees and the gracious but entirely unobtrusive service. Though the menu changes regularly, you're almost always assured some kind of scallop starter -- two perfectly cooked pieces served over lentils and beets, or sometimes escarole or mixed greens. You also won't want to miss the braised veal cheeks, which are unbelievably tender and meaty without being gamey. Seafood is also a good bet, since the chef's former employer is Queen Village standby Little Fish. Just remember to bring two things with you: cash (credit cards aren't accepted) and a good bottle of wine -- the closest liquor store is six long blocks away. And especially on weekend nights, be sure to call ahead: the 32-seater fills up quickly.

We greatly enjoyed the five-course prix-fixe Sunday dinner menu. All the dishes were exceptionally good, the ambience was lovely and the wait staff were efficient, knowledgeable and extremely pleasant. Will definitely recommend this charming restaurant to friends.

Overpriced for food that sounds and looks more exciting than it actually is. This restaurant serves inexpensive fish at prices that are really way out - the veal chop that was priced at $25. was no better than Little Pete's at $11.95.

  • A Cozy BYOB

    Review rating : 4out of 5   phillyfoodiegal - 03/06/2005

We enjoyed our meal at Pumpkin. We loved the fact that it's a byob. It's a small restaurant with an open kitchen. Not a large menu but our food was very good. Friendly service. We were made to feel welcome.
