Although its menu changed in the summer of 2003, the New Wave Cafe is still the friendly, sports-inspired place it's always been. The new culinary roster, however, refutes the spot's reputation as a place to drink while waiting for your table to be ready at Dmitri's down the block: New Wave Cafe has become a destination in and of itself. There's less emphasis on bar food and an edgier tone to the menu. In addition to intriguing entrees (cinnamon-crusted pork tenderloin with apples, orange-and-garlic-grilled steak, and peppered short ribs with walnut mashed potatoes, among others), whole new sections have been added. Opt for savory vegetable chips with Gorgonzola; fire-roasted pepper and chickpea dip, or crispy oysters with remoulade from the Tastings menu. If you're feeling less adventurous, grab a pie from the grilled pizza menu, with topping combos such as roasted duck, caramelized onion, apple and mushrooms; provolone, tomato ragout and basil; or arugula, prosciutto, tomatoes and three cheeses. You can, of course, revert to the old comforting standby: New Wave still boasts a big, fat, juicy burger.
