The location is Center City, but the ambience is pure Euro flair. With the feel of a Belgian moules frites boite, Monk's boasts more than 200 Belgian beers and a Beer Bible to help you choose one -- or a dozen -- to enjoy on any given night. The food menu is every bit as inspired as the beer offerings and is heavy, of course, on items made with beer, including Rodenbach Red Ale-braised octopus, Duvel Belgian Ale-sauteed scallops and mussels, filets stuffed with Roquefort bleu cheese and topped with a Rochefort Trappist ale sauce, and even a salad with a Belgian Gueuze dressing. The main menu draws are the mussels (get 'em prepared at least five different ways), the burgers, which have a cult following all their own, and the frites, served with a randy bourbon mayonnaise. Monk's is dark and earthy, with two bars, rich paneling and a decidedly Goth feel.

Meet friends on 7-30-09 after work. I hadn't been in several years,WOW the place is terrible. Dirty glasses on back bar , some strange ceiling AC unit dripping on me and the bar. $7.oo for a small glass of wheat beer , just a Blue Moon knockoff. A friend had a glass of cheap Mirassou wine ,$8.00,the bottle sells for $8.00. Left ,after 90 minutes, to eat elsewhere, the food going by looked tired.Three beers $26.00 and the dirty glasses were still there>>Avoid this dump !!(system forces a star )
Great Place
I've been going to Monk's for close to 10 years. There was a period when they changed their bread and it went downhill but now it is back to its great burgers again. I still have yet to find a better burger then Monk's even living in Manhattan for the past 5 years. I highly recommend the burgers here along with the mussels and frites. It can get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights.
NO BIG DEAL, BUT GREAT FRIES.!
BURGERS ARE NO BIG DEAL, YES TASTY BUT MISSED THAT FRESH TASTE THAT MANY OTHERS HAVE, THE ROLL IS TOO HEARTY FOR THIS BURGER. THE PLACE IS A GARLIC LOVERS HAVEN, DAM NEAR EVERYTHING HAS GARLIC IN IT AND EVEN THE RESTROOM HAS THE ODOR. (HOWEVER, REST ROOM IS CLEAN) THE PLACE IS A BIT DINGY, BUT LOCALS SEEM TO LOVE IT. THE FRIES ARE ONE OF THE BEST TASTING ONES I HAVE HAD. PROBABLY WILL NOT RETURN AND TRY OTHERS BUT IF YOU LIKE GOOD BEERS, THEY CERTAINLY HAVE.
Long time customer

Beers are always super!!! Try it in the afternoon. No crowds. Great Food!
BARB NOV11 is insane.

I have been known to take weekend romps up to Philly (from South Florida) simply to enjoy the amazing beer, food and ambience at Monk's. The Monk's chicken sandwich is to DIE for....the mussels show up in my dreams from time to time, and I have never been disappointed in the many different beers that just keep coming to my table. The waitstaff is ALWAYS busy, and therefore service is usually not the quickest, but it is always knowledgable and polite, and the food and drink are always worth the wait. The ambience is earthy, dark and comforting, and I have never recommended Monk's to anyone who has been disappointed, and believe me, I recommend it a LOT.
dirty restaurant, slow service, medicore food, VERY EXPENSIVE

UPON ARRIVAL WE WERE TOLD 10 MINUTE WAIT TIME. BOUGHT 2- 12 OUNCE BEERS AT THE BAR FOR $19.25 WHICH WWERE BOTH WARM. HALF HOUR LATER WE WERE SEATED, WAITRESS CAME TO TABLE 10 MINUTES LALTER, THEN WE GOT MUSSELS AND SALAD, THE FRIES WERE LIMP AND BARELY WARM.
THE HARBURGERS NEVER ARRIVED AFTER 1 HOUR WAIT TIME, THEN WE LEFT ...HUNGRY....WENT TO TACO BELL.
IT COST ABOUT $16.00 IN GAS TO DRIVE TO MONKS.......
THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE..THIS PLACE IS DIRTY, JUST LOOK IN THE FRONT WINDOW AND SEE THE FILTY BEER BOTTLES ON DISPLAY...GRIMMY AND GREASY EVERYTHING, EVEN THE MENUES
AFTER $55.00 ( INCLUDING 2 WARM BEERS EACH)WE LEFT VERY VERY HUNGRY.
DONT WASTE YOUR GAS , MONEY OR TIME.
