There are those in this world who see coffee as a basic utility, good for a morning kick-start or an afternoon nudge. These Styrofoam gulpers would probably miss the point of La Colombe, a virtual shrine to the art of the good cup. This window-lined storefront just north of Rittenhouse Square attracts a healthy mix of professionals, grad students and the gainfully unemployed. Muted colors and mosaic-tiled tables, along with flaky pastries and a lenient smoking policy, impart the cafe's European air. It's an environment so casual as to nearly obscure La Colombe's status as a caffeine empire, best recognized in foodie circles as the supplier to such haute restaurants as Le Bec Fin. Why all the fuss? The proof is in the powder: Master roaster Jean-Philippe Iberti and partner Todd Carmichael blend and brew with the kind of exacting aestheticism usually associated with fine winemaking. Their expertise shows.

Has the best iced coffee and the help is ALWAYS friendly. Wish they could get some of the people who take up space for hours doing their homework or knitting to let other people sit down and enjoy their coffee!!

La Colombe is great, but its more than just coffee. The staff is quick and friendly; in the 5 minutes that you have their attention! Its usually packed so they want you to get your coffee and go but comeback for that refill! And luckily it is now a smokefree environment! And if people watching is your favorite passtime, La Colombe is the best place for it! I've made loads of friends and have come to love coffee even more!

The freshest best roasted coffee you will ever have. Maybe a tad too light. They should make a French Roast. Try a biscotti. They are so good! The hot chocolate is a real treat.
On the other hand beware, parking is very very expensive. Do you want to stop in for a cup of coffie? 13 dollars for less than an hour to park in one of the lots. You will never get close on the street. Finding a table is also a challenge. The smelly hippies camp out for the day (one person hogging a table for themselves) spreading out there Mac laptops or books for all to see.
I would also like to say this is the 21'st century. Smokers should take it outside or quit.

If you don't like smoke, go to Starbucks or Cosi. However, if coffee and tobacco are inextricably intertwined for you as they are for me (I am Cuban), then La Colombe has the best coffee in Philly bar none. You won't get cancer from berathing second-hand-smoke for a few hours, so ENJOY the decadence. And for true indulgence, try the hot chocolate- it is simply AMAZING.

Can't us smokers have one nice place where we can sit with a cup of coffee, a good smoke, and delightful conversation without having those who "recently discovered" this place ruining it. Go to starbucks if you want the same old thing. La Colombe is the best. And it's not wanna be Euro trash who hangs out there, it's tried and true Euro trash, an all around fun breed.

It would be 5 stars if they stopped allowing smoking, but with smoking allowed, it's quite disgustin not to mention unhealthy. Without the smoking it is a wonderful cafe.
