An armpit of a bar, Dirty Frank's has been the favorite of the strung-out and underemployed for generations. Books, hubcaps, photos and beer signs populate the walls haphazardly, and decent local artwork is even featured in one area. A fairly large U-shaped bar features a surprisingly good selection of beer on tap and sometimes surly bartenders who like to ignore customers. The dartboard, curiously placed next to the toilet door, features as many holes outside of it as on the board. An interesting variety of solo drinkers, bikers and after-work folks who are unafraid of the down-and-out and slurred-speech regulars also spend their nights here. A very good jukebox helps pass the time at this legendary dive.

    I am a guy from the "burbs" and visit Philly about 4 or 5 times a years just to pub crawl, find new bars and meet interesting people. Sometimes I am with my fine wife, s, and sometimes with my pony tailed buddy, V. We found Franks about 2 years ago, complements of H.... from another bar. 90% of the time when we are in Philly we make sure we visit with Franks with it often being the last stop of the day. Don't think I have ever entered Franks without having a buzz.. I have probably been in more that 100 pubs / bars around the USA , and Dirty Franks from the first visit has always felt like home and is one of my favorite places to drink and talk with the down-to-earth patrons.     A nice little bar with a lovely sexy barmaid and
    she can pull pints as well as carrying on a lively
    and teasing conversation

    Used to love it. Asked the bartender if I could get a t-shirt discount since I'm a regular. She called me "white trash" I responded in kind, so she threw a pint of beer in my face (we're talking a glass literally went flying across the bar), then climbed onto the bar, ran along it, chased me out of the bar and grabbed me by the hair as I was hailing a cab. I called to complain and they laughed at me and told me they had witnesses saying that I had thrown beer in HER face. I called the police and filed a report. They told me unfortunately there wasn't much they could do if I wasn't bleeding, but recommended that I never go back. I'm passing the word along. I realize the ambience is initially enjoyable, and I'm a lifelong lover of dives, but this seems to fall into a category I'm not so familiar with. Disappointing. I'll have to find a new dive that's less jerry springer, more TRULY low key and unpretentious. I know if I was reading this I'd wonder if the person was just too uptight for the place or something, but I've been going to places like this for years and enjoying them no problem. Really disappointed in this place.

    Worth becoming a regular...they have a pet's night, quizzo night,
    and, if your're a regular, you get invited to their annal picnic!!!
    No adverts necessary...if you don't know about Dirty Frank's,
    you can walk right by it...only clue are the murals on the side of the building.

    Great local dive bar! Eclectic crowd populated mostly by local art students and recent underemployed college graduates. Stop by, grab a beer, talk about Nietzsche and play some darts.

    what can i say about dirty franks except as living in kensington its the only bar in the center city area that i actually love to go to great music great people perfect atmosphere everything is just good about it i cant wait for my next trip to d.f. i do need to get a new hat from there
