If you were to build a diner with the tools from your Sims game, it would probably look like the Dining Car, a shiny silver-and-black box with big, frosted Art Deco windows and lots of red-glowing glass blocks. The inside of this Northeast Philadelphia landmark retains the same kitschy, retro feel, and it serves up a fairly standard diner menu. The spot attracts the gamut of locals, from families to teenagers on a date to, especially, empty-nesters enjoying some hard-earned couple time. The menu is a manageable size, offering sandwiches, cold platters and above-standard treatments of entrees such as hot turkey, baked ham and strip-steak platters. A favorite: the huge and incredibly rich and cheesy crock of French onion soup. The Dining Car also is known for its desserts, like apple-walnut pie, Jewish apple cake and -- get this -- two-layer chocolate-covered cheesecake (oh, my). Service is friendly and relaxed, and on weekend nights and Sunday mornings, expect to wait for a seat.

    Review rating : 2out of 5   bonz430 - 07/16/2007

The food was pretty good, but it was not as good as the mayfair diner. The mayfair diner has much betetr dinner specials.

  • The Dining Car Rocks!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   pdragonflyg - 01/06/2006

Wow! What a busy and energetic place! The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful with the menu, and very accomodating to special requests. Our meal was hot and delicious, and the portion sizes were generous. After dinner was over, we were tempted with a fabulous selection of desserts, which I'm told is created fresh in their own bakery. On the way out, the line at the cash register was quickly taken care of by their cash only policy. No standing around waiting for everyone to whip out their plastic! I like that. We will definitely be coming back for more wonderful service and excellent food.

  • ALL AROUND GREAT

    Review rating : 5out of 5   megnbran1 - 01/05/2006

Stopped at the dining car over the weekend. Food was great. The service was terrific. My waitress was so friendly, she felt like an old friend. I had a cheesesteak, that was a real philly steak. You would think a steak from a diner would be far from the real thing but it was great. Had somekind of chocolate cheesecake
( I think that's what its called) whatever it was called it was awesome. Not taking credit cards isn't a big deal, there is a
MA C machine right outside the door. Who wants to pay intrest on a meal a month later anyway.

  • One of the area's best diners

    Review rating : 5out of 5   rca8497 - 01/04/2006

I just got home from the Dining Car. I live 10 miles away from it and drive up there every so often just because I always enjoy it. The staff are consistently attentive and friendly and the food is always delicious. French apple pie is the best in town.

  • Best Coffee in the city !

    Review rating : 5out of 5   mllejezzybelle - 01/04/2006

This place has the best coffee in the city and they let it flow! Try their French Onion Soup, it's awesome. So is their chip beef. I like the fact that they have grits. Some of my other favorites are
their Cheesesteaks, Chicken Salad and I love their Pepperoni Cheese Bread! They are famous for their Apple Walnut pie and got best of Philly for their Jewish Apple, but I think their Orange Crunch cake and their Chocolate Chip Cake are the best.

  • CASH ONLY - IRS?

    Review rating : 2out of 5   dam877 - 08/29/2005

    PARTY OF 6, TOTAL EMBARASSMENT!
CREDIT CARD REFUSED. CASH ONLY!! WAS TOLD THAT ATM MACHINE WAS OUTSIDE THE DOOR.
LARGE SIGN SHOULD HAVE BEEN POSTED AT DOOR WHERE PATRONS SEE IT AS THEY ARRIVE (very small sign is at register; too late after eating a meal}. HE CARRIES CREDIT CARDS, VERY LITTLE CASH & DOES NOT USE ATM MACHINES.
    UNFORTUNATE! IRS TAXES ?
