Long known in Philadelphia for his ultra-conservative take on restaurateuring, Stephen Starr breaks out of his middle-of-the-road mold with his 12th venture, the fanciful Continental Mid-town.

If you go, expect to find yourself smack in the middle of a convergence of Starr groupies, Philly's cutting-edge gadabouts and oh-so-right-now tourists -- all of who no doubt will be drawn like so many sophisticated moths to the bright light of the restaurant's 3D, five-foot-tall olive complete with Plexiglas toothpick and lighted pimiento. The retro-chic style continues inside with faux-leather booths, a sunken lounge, funky, clunky chairs, a rubber bar, and tables with that homey ''frozen tablecloth'' look.

Much of the cuisine echoes that of the Mid-town's big sister, the original Continental Restaurant and Martini Bar, while the rest was created anew by executive chef Michael Dean Hazen. Classics to look for include teriyaki filet mignon with wasabi mashed potatoes, beer-battered shrimp, calamari with saffron aioli and black sesame crab cakes. New offerings include macaroni and cheese with lobster, tofu dumplings and Ahi tuna tartare. Of course, the fancy drink menu includes things you've never heard of before but soon won't be able to live without, including the Dean Martini, served with a Lucky Strike and a book of matches.

Arrived about 7:45 on a Saturday nite. The crowd wasn't that bad for that time. The wait time was reasonable, they told my party of 2 about a half hour. Waited about then, went to check how much longer and the hostess tried to tell me another half an hour,I told her I was told that a half hour ago. She 'checked' the board and then told me there 'happened' to be an availablity. There should have, being that I saw a few empty tables. Whether this was just to give an air of importance or not, considering it was 'Center City'. The uniforms of the waitresses were very cute in my personal opinion! The tables near the bar area were a little tight in space. The menu didn't seem to have alot of standards, more of 'mixed' dishes,so ended up having the chicken caesar salad. A 'downside' was that some of the dishes were 'made to share'. Personally my date and I generally do not have the same tastes so that idea wasn't very useful. The dessert selection was ample and unique. It was a good looking crown and even waitstaff!

  • No Starr for this place!

    Review rating : 0out of 5   bsnyfip - 10/26/2004

This place is a joke. If you are under 18 it might be fun. Otherwise be prepared for the rudest service with ok food. If you like abuse for yor money, this is your place. Starr needs to go to his restaurants once in a while - he needs to hire people who no how to serve, not pose and give attitude!

  • Disappointed....

    Review rating : 0out of 5   jbr1165 - 10/19/2004

I was looking forward to the opening of the new Continental for months, only to be disappointed. The drinks are below average, I can make a better cosmo myself. The food is just ok but not for the price and you would think that with all the space the bar areas would be larger. The seats are uncomfortable and don't get me started on the deck. Only one elevator goes up there and you have to wait in line for it. Isn't that a fire hazard? I don't mind spending money on quality drinks and food, but this place is just not worth it. I'll just go back to Old City.

  • THE INSIDE ON STARR

I HAVE ALOT TO SAY ABOUT THE BEHIND THE DOOR STUFF ABOUT STARR, BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY THIS ONE THING ABOUT HIM AND HIS COMPANY...I WAS JUST "FIRED" FOR COMPING A ROUND DRINKS TO 2 WOMEN WHO I'VE BEEN SERVING DRINKS TO FOR YEARS AT THE 5 OTHER STARR RESTAURANTS THAT I'VE WORKED!!!! I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A SPOTTER AT THE BAR WHO SAID I DIDNT RING UP THE DRINKS AND I KEPT THE $20 THAT WAS LEFT ON THE BAR...OF COURSE I KEPT THE $20 IT WAS MY TIP AND THE DRINKS WERE RUNG ON A COMP CHECK AND I MADE SURE THEY WERE BECAUSE I KNEW HE WAS A SPOTTER...SO 2 DAYS LATER I WAS FIRED THIS EVEN AFTER A MANAGER COMPED THE DRINKS OUT WHEN I LEFT ON THE NIGHT OF ME BEING A NICE GUY....CONTINENTAL IS GROSSING 50,000 EVERY THURS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT AND 30,000 A NIGHT THE REST OF THE WEEK AND I WASNT ALLOWED TO COMP A DRINK!!! I'VE COMP 1,000 DRINKS IN 5 YEARS FOR STARR AND NEVER WAS I TOLD I WASNT ALLOWED...YOU WOULD FIGURE SOMEONE WHO HAS WORKED FOR THIS MAN FOR 5 YEARS AND SOMEONE WHO SPENDS HIS TIPS ON STARRS OTHER RESTAURANTS EVERY WEEK FOR 6 YEARS WOULD AT LEAST GET A SIT DOWN WITH STARR WHO CLAIMS TO BE FRIENDS WITH ME---BUT NO I WAS JUST FIRED JUST LIKE THAT AND BASICALLY CALLED A THIEF!!!! THE MANAGER DIDNT EVEN LOOK IN THE COMPUTER TO SEE THAT THERE WAS A COMP CHECK FOR THE DRINKS...SOOOO WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS: KARMA KARMA KARMA, STARR..I CANT WAIT TILL IT BITES YOU AND BRADLEE BARTAM BEHINDS.... WAY TO TREAT SOMEONE WHO WORKED HIS BUTT OFF FOR YOU AND SPENT HIS HARD EARN MONEY TO PUT RIGHT BACK INTO YOUR POCKET...

  • don't waste your time or money

    Review rating : 0out of 5   johnpysar - 10/01/2004

long story short..i had a horrible time w/ an out of town friend that i took there b/c i thought it would be a cool place to go to show her what "philadelphia" is like. the wait staff/bar tenders were pretentious teenagers, their drinks were horrible (a dirty martini that tasted like ocean water for $12, wow!!!), and one of the bartenders ended up using my credit card to pay for someone else's bill!! they have 200 employees in the whole place, so it took me a WEEK of dealing with 5 different managers on the phone who never called me back to get the money put back on my credit card. I would never go back there even if i was forced to, so if you do, watch your bank statements!!! :)

  • Oh so fabulous

    Review rating : 4out of 5   kek41881 - 09/26/2004

I had a fun night sipping martinis, munching the fries (a must, but make sure you have at least 3 other friends to share with!), and enjoying the scenery of beautiful people. A great spot to chill and see and be seen.

  • So not even right...

I completely disagree with many of the reviews on this page. First of all if you want cheap food go to McDonalds, cuz honestly I used to work at Ruby Tuesday - who's atmosphere was completely tackier than this and prices there are even higher than 8.00 for a hamburger. With that Burger you also get a pickle and a side order (Yummy all American potato salad in my experience) - it's a meal - in a great environment. The second level has seating hanging from the ceiling and the best part about the place is the roof area. You simply take the side elevator up and there is a bar, a lounge and a seating area. There is also a guy (Likely seasonal) up there flipping burgers on an old school grill - completely charming for such a classy place. I think the prices are insanely reasonable for the experience and judging from the booming business they've done I gather I'm not alone. It is an upscale crowd as well, which further improves things. Desserts are CHEAP! 3.00 - VERY small, but DELICIOUS and cheap. Gourmet worthy. Actually better pricing than Tangerine and some of his other places.

  • you gotta be kidding!

Started on the roof top, Very cool place for drinks.
Waited 1hour and a half to be seated, only to find out that there was no seating for our party of four! Had to wait another 25 mins.
Got to our table with the cheeesy pipe wire chairs that as we sat tumbled forward and landed two of us on the floor!
I will never return as the food was sub par and not worth my time or effort.

  • Overpriced

    Review rating : 3out of 5   phy11y - 09/08/2004

My daughter and I were there for the 1st day of serving lunch. The menu isn't very extensive and I think 8.00 is crazy for a hamburger. We were told AFTER we ordered that they were serving hot dogs in their rooftop area. The decor is really nice, but not worth the price.
