Long known in Philadelphia for his ultra-conservative take on restaurateuring, Stephen Starr breaks out of his middle-of-the-road mold with his 12th venture, the fanciful Continental Mid-town.
If you go, expect to find yourself smack in the middle of a convergence of Starr groupies, Philly's cutting-edge gadabouts and oh-so-right-now tourists -- all of who no doubt will be drawn like so many sophisticated moths to the bright light of the restaurant's 3D, five-foot-tall olive complete with Plexiglas toothpick and lighted pimiento. The retro-chic style continues inside with faux-leather booths, a sunken lounge, funky, clunky chairs, a rubber bar, and tables with that homey ''frozen tablecloth'' look.
Much of the cuisine echoes that of the Mid-town's big sister, the original Continental Restaurant and Martini Bar, while the rest was created anew by executive chef Michael Dean Hazen. Classics to look for include teriyaki filet mignon with wasabi mashed potatoes, beer-battered shrimp, calamari with saffron aioli and black sesame crab cakes. New offerings include macaroni and cheese with lobster, tofu dumplings and Ahi tuna tartare. Of course, the fancy drink menu includes things you've never heard of before but soon won't be able to live without, including the Dean Martini, served with a Lucky Strike and a book of matches.

love it!
One of my favorite places in the city! The drinks are a little pricey, but the food is reasonably priced and delicious!!!
Add CommentLoads of fun for quirky types
Went there in April with two teenage daughters - they had a blast with the funky furniture and unusual cuisine - the lobster mac & cheese was "the bomb" and the seared tuna with very fresh. They can't wait to go again and we live in NYC!
FABULOUS!!!

My son and I were in Philly for the King Tut exihibit. and our first evening we went to the condinental Mid-town at the advice of my eldest daughter. She said we had to try the lobster and mac and cheese. We went there, gave our names and were given a pager to let us know when we were to be seated. We waited about 10 minutes then our pager went off. We were seated inside the main dining room and I loved the decor! The blue overhead lighting was so trendy, our waitress was a total sweetheart- she actually was around my daughters age and very friendly. I was probably one of the oldest patrons in the place but I never felt uncomfortable at all- the general feeling in there was one of complete relation yet very fun and trendy. The 3 dishes we ordered were out of this world- I have traveled all over the world and never had such delicious food as I did 2 nights ago! It was so great that we even ordered desserts! Next time in Philly, this will be one place that I will return to- without any hesitation!
Horrible Experience 11/10/06

You can go there if you want to be heckled, mocked, and harrassed for being female. This used to be my favorite midtown bar, but I will NEVER go back there again. A bunch of guys harassed every female to walk around the main floor and since they were friends of employees got away with it. They were horrible and rude and no one should have to deal with that and have their night ruined in this way. If you want to be treated like dirt, me by guest and go there.
good atmosphere, okay food

great place to eat and talk with friends, but the food was nothing spectacular. excellent, quick service. great for a date.
My boyfriend and I loved it!

The atmosphere was very cute. They have a nice drink selection. As far as food goes, the food is really good, but it is not somewhere you go when you are hungry. The dishes are affordable, but you do not get much and therefore may need to order several if you have not already eaten. The crab wontons are the best ever! They even beat PF Chang on the wontons. I will definitely be going back next time I visit Philly (I am from DC).
For a fun time with friends!
Met up with three other friends there and it exceeded all our expectations. It was a Thursday and we were seated in under 15mins. Once we got used to the serving style of tapas-like dishes everything flowed. Our waiter was more than helpful explaining dishes and making sure we were set. And the food! Fantastic. We ordered 7 dishes and didn't have one bad thing. A bit of advice: as my mom used to say, "don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach". Start with a fewer number of selections and then just order more if it looks like you need them. It will save your tummy and your bill!
Who pays for attitude in Philly?

I visited Continental Mid-Town last night with several friends. We had made a reservation for 6 without a problem earlier in the day. When we arrived on time for our reservation, we were told they don't take reservations and the wait would be around 40 minutes. When we checked in with the hostess 25 minutes later to see how things were progressing, we were told there were 2 large parties ahead of us and who knows how long the wait would be. As I stood outside the restaurant and looked in on the same ho-hum patrons you find anywhere around Philadelphia along with the snobby and overdone hostess, I found it hard to believe this is a place where anyone would want to see or be seen. We had dinner at La Castagne down the street - where there was actual service & great food in a beautiful setting! I'd prefer to "be seen" at La Castagne any day.
A waste of time

Those in the "know" will find this place a joke. People who are "new" to dining in town might like it because they don't know any better. I used to be like this. But after many years of eating out and meeting people in the industry, Mid Town Continental doesn't rate. The staff is very "stiff" and not personable at all. Service robots I call them. When most of us go out to eat, we like to be "cared for" to an extent. We are spending lots of $ for the food and the service. But the servers at this place treat you like "they" are doing you a favor. I was sitting at the bar with friends and one bartender asked me to pay for our meal "before" she punched it into the computer. I found this a bit odd since I am a bartender and I would never do this to a group (and a well dressed group) sitting at the bar. We had no chance of walking out on the bill. I payed her and after we ate I told her (privately so I wouldn't ruin her other tip opportunities) that I couldn't offer her a tip because of the poor service. It didn't make or break her but maybe next time she will remember our faces because of it and treat us better. They fired mario, another bartender who posted here because of comping a rd of drinks for good customers. You learn to do this to "good paying customers." It keeps them happy and coming back to spend more $. I will NEVER go back to Mid Town Continental. In all fairness, Old City Continental has cool servers and bartenders. Go there for your Continental fix. Mid Town is pretty, but it suxx!!
