In 1949, George and Gladys Stanich opened a tavern; she cooked, he philosophized. Their kids still run the store that still has a reputation for personalized service, plenty of sports talk and the ''Special,'' a quarter-pound burger topped with a fried egg, ham, bacon and cheese and billed as the world's greatest. The rest of the menu sort of hovers around that huge royal hamburger. Choose from traditional sandwiches such as a patty melt, BLT, ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly. Spend some time perusing the memorabilia-packed walls, or work off that burger playing pool.

burger???
That was not a burger. It was a huge, sloppy sandwich featuring a 4oz. ground beef patty among other things. Dripping with thousand island dressing, onions and iceberg lettuce falling out all over the place, it was a mess. The beef was completely lost amongst the pile of cheap, crappy toppings. Granted, the price was only $6, so it was a good value, but it's just not a burger.
Add CommentDarn Good Burger.
One of Oregon's little-known, best kept burger spots... Nothing beats a Stanich burger after a day on the river, a stroll along the waterfront, or a 2 hour drive from Eugene - - You'll find yourself justifying the drive.
Highly recommended. I live 10 minutes from Helvetia... and prefer the drive to Stanich's. Fries are great at both places.
By the way - - I can only speak to the West side location (near Macadam) - - I'm assuming east side is equally satisfying.Best Burger; You're Kidding!
WE WENT THERE BECAUSE SOMEONE HAD RECOMMENDED THEIR SO CALLED "FIVE POUND" BURGER. WE WERE QUITE DISAPPOINTED; NO WHERE NEAR FIVE POUNDS. IT WAS JUST A REGULAR BURGER WITH ALL OTHER STUFF LIKE EGGS, CHEESE, ETC. ADDED TO IT. THE PRESENTATION AND TASTE WAS NOT GREAT AT ALL. THE FRIES WERE SOGGY AND DARK BROWN. THE SERVICE WAS SLOW AND WE EVEN HAD TO WAIT A WHILE FOR OUR CHECK.
BEST BURGER !!! FORGET IT!!! WE WENT ONCE AND DO NOT HAVE THE DESIRE TO GO THERE AGAIN!these people are high

I have no clue why all of these folks rate Stanich's the number one burger. I moved here 3 years ago and was desperate for a good burger, and heard this was the place to go. I went and haven't gone back. People, I don't eat fast food, but I tell ya I'd rather go to Mc Donalds. The burger I had was so very disappointing- frozen looking patty and low quality ingredients. Sadly, I still haven't found a good burger in this city.

Every time I go to Portland my brother takes me there. They do make a very good burger.
Great burger ..slow service
Excellent burgers ..bad fries, and slow service.
I just don't feel comfortable in taverns or bars, but this place does have a certain "homey" feeling about it.Still a Good Gurger
While the burger does not meet the old standard...huge,messy and incredible to eat and impossible to put down, its still quite good. However, it doesn't meet the "FIVE-POUND" description. Burger King is a distant third.
Best Burger??
Right, And I bet you'd think that Skippers has the best SeaFood also.
I refuse to give this more time.GREAT burger...but, FIVE lb?

I had my first Stanich's "Special" over 20 yrs ago, and I still rank 'em as among the most impressive burgers I've ever had...but FIVE pounds??? Just what did you folks weigh--the whole meal, including the plate (actually, doesn't the Special still come in a basket?)???
